#8 Spartans Take Down #11 Messiah in Big Time Conference Clash

YORK, Pa. - The No. 8 York women's lacrosse team limited No. 11 Messiah to their lowest goal total of the season in a 10-5 victory Saturday night in a heavyweight MAC Commonwealth battle at Kinsley Field.

After Messiah cut the York lead to one (6-5) with 14:15 left in the fourth on the woman-up advantage, the Spartans responded in a big way by ripping off four-straight goals combined with four huge saves from Bella Garabo to close out the win. Garabo finished with a season-high 10 stops, including seven in the second half, while Christina Vendelis (4) and Nesiah Bertram (3) combined for seven caused turnovers in a stifling defensive effort by the Spartans.

#11 Messiah 8-2 (1-1)
#8 York 7-2 (2-0)

How It Happened
York came out sharp and won the first two draws to take a 2-0 lead less than four minutes in. The Spartans fought through a pair of cards, but Messiah kept knocking on the door and eventually came back to score a pair less than two minutes apart to tie the game up, 2-2, by quarter's end. York had ample opportunities to extend the lead further throughout the quarter, but came up empty on two free-position shots and were denied by Messiah goalie Mackenzie O'Haver three times in the final three minutes.

The second quarter began just how the first one started, with Gianna Huet scoring first early on, followed by another tally by Sydney Mentzer. Zoe Kluegel also got involved as she zipped a shot past O'Haver from nine meters out to put the Spartans ahead, 5-2, with 7:443 left in the second. The York defense stopped the Falcons on their first seven possessions of the quarter and caused turnovers on four of those possessions. Messiah managed to steal a goal right before halftime when Rachel Delate notched her 33rd goal of the season on a free-position opportunity with 40 seconds left as the Falcons trailed, 5-3, at the break.

The Falcons owned a 3-0 advantage in draw controls in the third quarter, but only managed to find the net once in the quarter as York maintained their lead, 6-4, at the end of the period. Bella Garabo stopped three of Messiah's six total shots in the third quarter, including one with three seconds left. Jen Campbell gave the Spartans their lone goal of the quarter with 16 seconds left when she whizzed a free-position shot past O'Haver from eight meters out.

The Spartans put together an incredible fourth quarter as they held the Falcons to just one goal, fought off a pair of woman-down situations and denied Messiah on their final seven possessions after scoring early in the period to cut the Spartan lead to one. York was in a groove offensively down the stretch, scoring four times on just five total shots in the fourth quarter, and ripped off three goals in less than three minutes to take a commanding 9-5 lead with 5:20 left. Then, after a pair of stops, Logan Ward returned the favor to her defensive teammates and scored her second goal of the quarter with 1:47 left to put the finishing touches on the 10-5 victory.
