Extra-Man Unit Powers #14 Spartans to Victory at Eastern

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - The No. 14 Spartans held off a fourth-quarter surge by Eastern and handed the Eagles their first conference loss of the season in a 14-11 victory on Saturday.

The Spartans capitalized on a season-high five man-up goals through the first three quarters to take a seven-goal lead heading into the fourth quarter. That lead was tested as the Eagles peppered the Spartans with 15 total shots and 10 shots on goal while scoring five times in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough as Spartan netminder Jack Keller produced five fourth-quarter saves to hold off Eastern.

#14 York 8-5 (4-0 MACC)

How It Happened
Both teams came out firing in the first quarter as they each registered double-digit shot totals and the two goalies combined for 11 saves, but it was the Spartans who came out on top, 5-2, by quarter's end. The big difference was two costly penalties by the Eagles, including a two-minute non releasable cross-check infraction, which resulted in two Spartan man-up tallies. Just seconds after the first penalty expired, Eastern got charged with a 30-second penalty which resulted in a third man-up goal for York with Will Harnick scoring twice on the extra-man unit.

The Spartans used a second-quarter run to open up a 9-4 lead heading into halftime. Chris and Nick Fanelli combined for three-straight Eastern goals to cut their team's deficit to one (5-4) with 9:06 left in the second. York countered with a four-goal run to end the quarter with Harnick scoring the final three of that run to bring his halftime goal total to five.

The Eagles had hope coming out of the break and scored in the opening minute of the third quarter, but the Spartans slammed the door as they ripped off four-straight and ended the period with a 13-6 advantage. Another pair of Eastern penalties proved costly once again and helped fuel York's four-goal run. JD Townsend capped the run with his second man-up goal of the day and assisted Michael Russo on his man-up tally early in the quarter as Townsend finished the day with three points on the Spartan extra-man unit.

York's seven-goal lead heading into the fourth proved vital as the Eagles threw everything they had into a comeback effort. Eastern kept the turnovers to a minimum (2), won the ground ball battle and racked up 15 shots in the fourth quarter which resulted in five goals. Spartan goalie Jack Keller was under siege the entire fourth quarter and hung tough as he compiled five saves in the final period which sealed the deal for York.

Up Next
The Spartans return to the field on Wednesday at Albright for a MAC Commonwealth matchup in Reading.

Notes
York improves to 12-1 all-time against Eastern as the Spartans have won 11-straight against the Eagles dating back to 2015 … Will Harnick moved up the program's career rankings following his second eight-point performance of the season as he is now fifth in points (197) and fourth in goals (151) … Harnick now has 50 goals on the season which is just seven shy of his career-high and 10 shy of the program record of 60 … Jack Keller established a new career-high with 17 saves on the day which are the most by a Spartan goalie since Landry Marshall's 17-save effort against No. 1 RIT in the 2018 NCAA Quarterfinals.
