Softball Sweeps Hood in Home Conference Clash

YORK, Pa. - The York softball team rolled to a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader sweep of Hood at home Friday afternoon.

The Spartans needed a fifth-inning rally to pull off a 5-2 comeback win in game one before limiting the Blazers to just one hit in a 6-0 triumph in game two. Morgan Sauers came through with clutch hits in both games as she led the Spartans with five runs in a 5-for-8 performance with a pair of extra-base hits. Alyssa Harhigh capitalized on Sauers' on-base success with a team-leading three RBI on the day in a 4-for-7 effort.

How It Happened
The Spartans had a chance to break the game open in the bottom of the first when Daphney Adams wore a pitch on the arm to load the bases with two outs. Fortunately for Hood, Rebecca Gottleib worked out of the jam as she got Kaela Fritz to line out to short.

The Blazers broke the scoreless tie in the third with a pair of infield singles as part of the rally. Jocelyn Pfleiger roped a double to right center to bring in Colleen Blasko from second and Gottleib followed with a sacrifice fly to left before Rachel Benden fouled out to Reagan Wolford up the right field line.

York answered back in the bottom of the third. Morgan Sauers led off with a triple down the right field line and scored when Alyssa Harhigh smoked a single through the left side. After the hot start to the inning, the Spartans went away quietly as they failed to get another run across while leaving a runner stranded.

The Spartans took the lead (3-2) in the fifth with two runs on three hits and left two stranded. Bri McKeown reached on an error by first baseman Pfleiger which loaded the bases. York capitalized on the opportunity as Adams poked a sacrifice fly to right to bring in Taylor Coon from third and Fritz followed up with a single to right to bring in Harhigh from second.

York tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth on two more hits. Coon found two-out lightning with a double to left center and then scored on a Sauers seeing-eye single through the right side. Later in the inning, a costly error by Jordan Long at second base on what should have been the third out allowed Sauers to score from second.

Amanda Criss tossed four-straight scoreless innings to finish the game after giving up two runs in the third. The Spartan hurler posted eight strikeouts on the day with five in the first two innings and allowed just two hits in the final four frames.

How It Happened
York put the first runs on the board and took a 3-0 lead in the third while scoring all three runs with two outs. Morgan Sauers came through in the clutch and extended the inning with a single up the middle which set the table for Alyssa Harhigh who blasted a home run over the left field fence for her sixth of the season. Bri McKeown and Daphney Adams followed with back-to-back singles to keep the rally going and Kaela Fritz capitalized with an RBI-single to left field.

The Spartans once again found a two-out spark in the fifth inning and hung two more runs on the board to take a 5-0 advantage. Adams produced a double to extend the inning and drove in Sauers in the process. Fritz and Emma Keller drew back-to-back walks to load the bases which set the table for Kylie Paules who grounded a ball between the legs of third baseman Kaelyn Blocher which allowed Adams to score from third.

While the Spartan offense did their part, Natalie Rietema and defense held up their end of the bargain as well. Rietema twirled a one-hit complete-game gem with four strikeouts, six ground outs and 11 fly outs.

The Spartans return to play Sunday with a home doubleheader against No. 1 Salisbury starting at 2 p.m.
