#1 Gulls Take Two From Spartans

YORK, Pa. - The York softball team dropped a pair to No. 1 ranked Salisbury at Spartan Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Sea Gulls edged the Spartans, 4-2, in a competitive battle in game one before exploding for six runs in the fifth inning of game two to claim an 8-0 win in six innings.

GAME 1
Salisbury 4, York 2

Pitchers of Record
WP: Savannah Sheats (8-0)
LP: Amanda Criss (6-5)

How It Happened
Both teams worked out of second inning jams to preserve the scoreless tie. The first two Sea Gulls reached base to start the second, including a lead-off double by Madison Lednum, but Amanda Criss buckled down and retired the next three batters in order. York had something cooking in the bottom half with two outs as Criss and Kaela Fritz came through with back-to-back singles, but Savannah Sheats worked an infield pop up to get out of trouble unscathed.

Salisbury broke up the scoreless draw with four runs on four hits in the fourth inning. The first six Sea Gull batters reached base to start the inning beginning with a lead-off walk by Lednum and that walk came back to hurt as Salisbury ripped off four-straight hits which led to the four runs. The Gulls had a chance to tack on more later in the frame with two runners in scoring position, but Natalie Paoli lined into an inning-ending double play with Morgan Sauers and Alyssa Harhigh combining on the play.

A Salisbury pitching change led to a two-run rally for York in the sixth as the Spartans tagged Madison Taylor with three hits in her relief appearance of Sheats. Taylor nearly made it through the inning unscathed, but her pitching counterpart, Criss, came through with a two-out two-run single to get the Spartans on the board.

Sheats returned to the circle in the seventh and finished the job to collect her eighth win of the season with five strikeouts, no walks and did not allow a run.

GAME 2
Salisbury 8, York 0

Pitchers of Record
WP: Lindsey Windsor (10-0)
LP: Natalie Rietema (6-8)

How It Happened
The game remained scoreless through four innings with a few close calls by the Sea Gulls, while the Spartans were held to just three hits during that span. Salisbury threatened with two runners in scoring position in the third as Abby Mace drew a walk and caught the Spartans napping as she stole second on the same play. Natalie Rietema managed to get Natalie Paoli to fly out and leave the two SU runners stranded. Later, the Gulls had the bases loaded in the fourth, but the Spartans got out of the jam as Taylor Scott was ruled out as she interfered with Alyssa Harhigh attempting to field a Madi Lemon grounder who decided to swing on a 3-0 count.

Salisbury had the bases loaded again in the fifth and this time broke through as Lindsey Windsor reached on a fielder's choice. The Spartans worked a double-play when Bri McKeown snared a Carrie Jacoby line drive at third and stepped on the bag to double-up Abby Mace. The Sea Gulls got a second wind with two outs when Lauren Meyers drove in another run with a single to left, followed by a Maddison Lednum walk to load the bases. That set the table for Emily Stockman who blasted a grand slam over the left field fence to bust open a 6-0 lead for the Gulls.

The Sea Gulls went right back to work in the sixth inning and racked up five hits while scoring the necessary two runs to get to the run rule. Windsor gave up a single to Taylor Coon to start the third, but worked three-straight ground balls to get out of the inning and end the game in six innings.

Up Next
The Spartans return to conference play Wednesday with a trip to Stevenson for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
