How It Happened
• Spartan starter
Zach Reed got the first two outs of the game on just three pitches. He then ran into trouble as Stephen Sommer singled to left. Matthew Stout was hit by a pitch and that was followed by a Christian Reyna single to left for the 1-0 Blazer lead. Stout then scored an unearned run on a passed ball for the second run of the inning.
• York answered quickly in the bottom of the first as
Robby Elzinga just missed a lead-off home run as he banged a double off the left field wall.
Gabe Trevena followed with a single to center, moving Elzinga to third. Trevena moved to second on a wild pitch to put a pair in scoring position.
Michael Tinneny then ripped a single to center to score Elzinga and Trevena, tying the game at two. The Spartans wouldn't be able to get any more in the inning as they had to settle for tying the game at two.
• The game would quiet down over the next four and a half innings as neither team really threatened to score. The Spartans finally took the lead in the fifth as Elzinga singled with one out. He came racing around to score as Tinneny ripped a rocket to deep right center, allowing the Spartans to take a 3-2 lead.
• York added to the lead in the sixth as
Jacob Deimling walked to lead off the inning. After a strikeout,
Chris Betler swatted a booming two-run homer to left center to put the Spartans up 5-2.
• The Green and White added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth as the Spartans loaded the bases with one out.
Lucas Prendergast plated one run with a sacrifice fly to left to score
Andrew Santarpia.
Brian Jakubek then shot a single down the left field line to score
Brendan Martin as York's lead grew to 7-2.
• The Blazers got a run back in the top of the ninth as Keegan Brennan hit a home run to left center but that would be all Hood would get off
Ethan Kennedy as the junior picked up the save with two innings of work in relief of Reed.
