How It Happened
• The Spartans got on the board in the top of the first as
Gabe Trevena singled, stole second and scored on an
Andrew Santarpia single to left for the 1-0 lead. The Spartans made it 2-0 in the fourth as
Brendan Martin walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. A line out to right pushed Martin to third and he came around to score on a
Lucas Prendergast sacrifice fly to center.
• The Green and White tacked on two more runs in the fifth as Trevena drew a one-out walk.
Michael Tinneny doubled to right center to put runners at second and third. They wouldn't be there long as Santarpia drove home Trevena with a single to center.
Jacob Deimling plated Tinneny with single to right as York led 4-0.
• The Spartans kept rolling in the sixth with three more runs.
Brian Jakubek doubled to left with one out to start the uprising.
Robby Elzinga scored Jakubek with an RBI single. Elzinga moved to second on a passed ball and to third when Trevena reached via an Eagle error. Tinneny got plunked by a pitch to load the bases. After a pop up for out number two, Deimling singled to center to score Trevena and Elzinga for a 7-0 Spartan lead.
• York tacked on a single run in the eighth with a Santarpia solo blast to right center. The Eagles broke up
Bryce Shaffer's shutout in the top of the eighth with a Brian Lang solo homer to left, cutting the Spartan lead to 8-1.
• The Green and White removed all doubt in the top of the ninth as they plated seven runs, pushing the lead to 15-1. Elzinga started the scoring with a sacrifice fly to center. Santarpia added an RBI single to make it 10-1. Deimling followed with an RBI single of his own to make it 11-1.
Chris Betler then delivered the exclamation mark with a grand slam to left for the final runs for the Green and White.
• The Eagles opened the bottom of the ninth with a pair of singles off of Shaffer. After a fly out to left, Austin Utterbaugh hit a three-run homer to chase Shaffer from the game.
Ethan Kennedy closed out the game as the Spartans won the series. Shaffer tossed a career-high 8.1 innings as he allowed four runs in his final 1.1 innings of action after seven shutout innings. He struck out five and did not walk a batter in the win.
