Mayer records career-high five assists in a seven-point day

GRANTHAM, Pa. - The No. 13 York men's lacrosse team captured their third-straight victory and snapped Messiah's four-game win streak in a 19-6 romp on Saturday in a MAC Commonwealth matchup.

York had 14 different goal scorers throughout the day, while limiting Messiah to a season-low six tallies on a season-worst 21 total shots. Ben Mayer led all players with a season-high seven points with a career-best five assists. Jack Keller highlighted a stellar Spartan defensive effort with five saves and just two goals allowed in 40 minutes of play.

How It Happened
The Spartans bolted out to a 6-1 first quarter lead after scoring six unanswered tallies to begin the game. York controlled possession and tempo courtesy of Vinny Facciponti's 7-for-8 effort on the faceoff. Will Harnick stood out as the only multi-goal scorer in the first period with two as five different Spartans found the back of the net in typical balanced offensive fashion for York.

The Falcons scored the opening goal of the second quarter after getting on the board in the final minute of the first quarter, but York ended the period on a four-goal run to take a 10-2 halftime lead. After a solid start to the quarter and overall even statistical performance by Messiah, the Falcons stumbled on a few missed shots and failed clears which opened the door just enough for York to come pouring. Three new Spartans found the back of the net in the second, but Ben Mayer remained the one constant throughout the first half with four points on two goals and two assists.

The two teams found late life in the third as they combined for five goals in the final five minutes of the period with the Spartans taking a 14-4 advantage in the end. The Spartans once again dominated at the faceoff with Facciponti and Hugo Spencer combining to win six of seven to aid a 15-4 Spartan shot advantage. JD Townsend scored twice in the quarter, including once on the man-advantage, while Mayer dished out three more assists to bring his total to five on the day.

The Falcons scored a pair in the fourth quarter to put bookends on a five-goal run by York as the Spartans closed out the 19-6 victory. Five different Spatrans accounted for York's fourth-quarter tallies as Rhys McCarver dished out a pair of assists. Spencer went 5-for-7 at faceoff and also found the back of the net in the final period of play.
