Huge First Half Powers #13 Spartans to Commonwealth Opening Win

The Spartans scored seven goals in the first and second quarters to earn the league win

YORK, PA – The 13th ranked York College men's lacrosse team scored 14 first half goals to cruise past Hood College, 20-4, in the MAC Commonwealth opener for both squads.
The Spartans scored seven goals in the first quarter and matched that with another seven goals in the second while the defense limited the Blazers to one first half goal.
The Spartans improve to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in the league while the Blazers fall to 6-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
 
How It Happened
• The Spartans got things rolling less than two minutes into the game as Ben Mayer notched his 15th goal of the year to put York on the board. The Green and White continued to dominate the first quarter as they got goals from Will Harnick, Ryan Kazella, Jack Grayson, and Eric Burbank as they raced out to a 5-0 lead. Mayer and Ames Clark closed out the first quarter scoring as the Spartans led 7-0 after 15 minutes of play. York out-shot their guests 16-5 in the first quarter including a 12-2 bulge in shots on goal.
• The Blazers got on the board to start the scoring in the second but the Spartans responded with another seven goals. Harnick and JD Townsend each scored three goals during the quarter while Mayer also scored for York.
• The scoring slowed in the third quarter as Coleton Mahorney, Tyler Palehonki, and Michael Russo scored for the Spartans as they led 17-2 at the end of three quarters of play.
• The fourth quarter started with a Townsend man-up goal and York finished the game outscoring the Blazers 3-2 in the fourth.
• York out-shot the Blazers 49-28 in total shots while York had a 35-14 margin in shots on goal. The Blazers had 25 turnovers while York had 18 in the game. York held a 41-16 margin in ground balls and the Spartans won 19-of-27 face offs.
