Softball Splits a Pair of One-Run Games at Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa. - The York softball team suffered an 4-3 extra-inning loss in game one followed by a 5-4 victory in game two Sunday in a pivotal conference doubleheader at Messiah.

The Falcons stole a game-one victory in eight innings on a Spartan error with two outs to cap off a come-from-behind effort after trailing for the first five innings. After falling behind early in game two, the Spartans rallied back and shut down the Falcon offense through the final five frames to earn the Sunday split.

Alyssa Harhigh led York with a combined 5-for-5 performance at the plate with two home runs and a triple, while recording four putouts and six assists with no errors at shortstop.

GAME 1
Messiah 4, York 3

Pitchers of Record
WP: Lydia Collison (8-1)
LP: Natalie Rietema (4-3)

How It Happened
Alyssa Harhigh provided the only offense for either team through the first four innings with a solo home run in the first inning. Natalie Rietema limited the Falcons to just two hits through the first five innings while holding Messiah off the board.

The Spartans tacked on another run in the top of the fifth (2-0) when Jess Cusumano scored from third on a wild pitch with no outs. With Kylee Paules on second, Lydia Collison went on to retire three-straight batters to work out of the jam which would play to Messiah's favor later in the contest.

The Falcons took advantage of York's missed opportunity in the sixth as they tied the game, 2-2, with a pair of runs on three hits and a Spartan error. Rietema buckled down and retired two-consecutive batters to end the inning while leaving a Falcon stranded on second.

After being held hitless in the top of the seventh, the Spartan defense picked up the slack in the bottom half of the frame and as Emma Keller turned an unassisted inning-ending double play at first base to send the game into an extra inning.

York took the lead in the eighth when Harhigh tripled to right center to drive in Taylor Coon. Harhigh would finish the half inning stranded on third as Collison recorded two huge outs against Daphney Adams and Emma Wade.

The Spartan defense retired two of the first three batters and stood on the doorstep of a game-one victory. Suddenly, the Messiah offense came back to life with back-to-back hits to tie the game up and caught a break with a Spartan miscue on a pop-up to second base which allowed Elianna Litwin to come in for the game-winning run.

The Spartans scored three runs on five hits in game one, led by Harhigh's 3-for-3 performance at. York committed three errors behind Rietema who tossed 7.2 innings with two strikeouts, four walks and three earned runs.

GAME 2
York 5, Messiah 4

Pitchers of Record
WP: Amanda Criss (3-2)
LP: Maggie Chinnadurai (3-6)

How It Happened
Both teams had runners in scoring position in the first inning, but it was Messiah who claimed the game's first runs. Elianna Litwin came through with a two-out, two-run triple to left field, but the damage stopped there as Jaden Keister flied out to end the inning.

The two sides traded runs in the second as Messiah held a 3-1 lead. Morgan Sauers came through with a two-out single which drove in Bri McKeown and the runs stopped there for York as two Spartans were left stranded. The Falcons answered with an RBI-ground out by Brielle Rosario as Paige Eakes led off the inning with a triple.

York flipped the script with four runs over the next two innings to take a 5-3 lead after four. McKeown fueled the two-inning rally with two hits and three RBI. Alyssa Harhigh also contributed to the offensive outburst with her second home run of the day in the fourth inning.

Criss retired nine-straight batters from the third through fifth innings and retired the leadoff to start the sixth before surrendering a double to McKenzie Shannon to break up the hitless streak. Litwin again came through for the Falcons and drove in a run on a ground out to cut the Spartan lead to one (4-3).

After surrendering the run to cut the margin to one, Criss and the Spartans put the clamps down and retired four of the final five batters to earn the game two win.

York out-hit Messiah 12-6 in game two with just one error in the field. Criss earned the win as she hurled a complete game two strikeouts, no walks and just two earned runs.
