Baseball Drops Series Opener at Alvernia

The Golden Wolves scored five runs in the third to earn the win

READING, PA – The York College Spartans dropped their weekend series opener at Alvernia 6-1 on an overcast Friday in Reading.
The Golden Wolves had huge five-run third inning to propel them to victory.

Records: York 8-9 (4-3 MACC); Alvernia 12-6 (6-1 MACC)
Runs: York 1; Alvernia 6
Hits: York 6; Alvernia 9
Errors: York 1; Alvernia 2
WP: Evan Wood (3-0); LP: Zach Reed (1-3)

How It Happened
• After a quiet first two and a half innings, the Golden Wolves drew first blood. With runners at first and third with one out, a Spartan error allowed the first Alvernia run to score. The Golden Wolves then got a two-run triple from Zach Rogacki to right field to give the hosts a 3-0 lead. Jason Kelly and Brandon Smith each had RBI singles in the inning as the Golden Wolves finished the frame with a 5-0 lead.
• Kelly tacked on a solo home run to left field in the fifth, pushing the lead to 6-0.
• That would be more than enough for Alvernia starter Evan Wood as the freshman right-hander held the Spartans to no runs on three singles with seven strikeouts and no walks in seven innings of action.
• The Spartans had very few chances in the game. York got two runners on in the second with one out but a strikeout and ground out short circuited the threat. York got two more runners on in the fifth but a pick off and a line out ended that uprising.
• Sophomore Michael Tinneny broke up the shutout in the ninth as he blasted a solo homer to left to get York on the board.

Spartan Notes:
The Spartans are now 16-9 all-time against Alvernia as the teams have split their last six meetings … the season has been one of streaks for the Spartans, after a season opening loss, York won three straight, then lost six straight followed by five straight wins and now York has lost two in a row … York was held to just six hits and that's the fourth time this year they have gotten six hits or less in a game … York did not draw a walk in the game … Cade Hollingsworth picked up his first college hit with a pinch hit single in the eighth … the Spartans are now 9-for-29 (.310) in pinch hitting opportunities … Michael Tinneny's ninth inning home run is just the third run the Spartans have scored in the ninth inning this year, their lowest scoring inning of the year … York is now 4-6 on the road … York is now 1-5 when their opponent scores first … leadoff hitter Robby Elzinga was held hitless for just the fourth time this year as his six game hit streak was snapped … senior leftfielder Brendan Martin had his seven game hit streak ended on Friday … sophomore Andrew Santarpia has at least one hit in all five of his games played since returning from injury.
