Women’s Lacrosse Tops Stevens in Top-25 MAC Crossover Clash

YORK, Pa. - No. 10 York women's lacrosse handed No. 25 Stevens their first loss of the season Wednesday night at Kinsley Field in a 20-8 triumph over the Ducks.

Billed as a nationally-ranked battle between the MAC's two defending conference champions got lopsided early as the Spartans parlayed a 3-0 opening run into a 14-2 halftime lead courtesy of an 8-0 second quarter scoring margin.

Team Records
#25 Stevens 7-1
#10 York 4-2

How It Happened
York scored on their first two shots of the game with goals from Sydney Mentzer and Zoe Kluegel, while Kiersten Blanchard tacked on a third tally on the team's fourth shot of the game to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead 3:19 after the opening draw. The Ducks fought back and cut the Spartan lead to 4-2 with a woman-up free-position goal by Morgan Westerby with 4:58 left in the first quarter.

Following the goal by Westerby, the flood gates opened for the Spartans as they went on to score 10 unanswered to end the first half, capped off by a woman-down goal by Mentzer with 34 seconds left. Seven different Spartans scored on that 10-goal run with Blanchard, Mentzer and Teresa Matthias all tallying twice.

York limited Stevens to just two total shots through the final 19 minutes of the first half, while the Spartans racked up 16. The Ducks turned the ball over seven times in the second quarter to York's one as the Spartans caused five Stevens blunders. York also went 7-for-7 on the clear in the second period while Stevens went just 2-for-4.

After being held to just one shot in the first half, Stevens' leading goal scorer, Camryn Rogers, found the back of the net twice in the first five minutes of the third quarter as her goal total increased to 32 for the season and the Ducks trailed by 10 once again. York responded swiftly with their big guns as Blanchard set up Mentzer for her fourth of the day and Blanchard took it herself a few moments later for fifth of the contest. Gianna Huet and Madison Kurland also made repeat appearances on the score sheet in the weighing minutes of the third quarter as York owned a commanding 18-5 lead heading into the fourth.

Freshman Kate Walsh opened the fourth quarter scoring with her first-career tally and later freshman Krista Yarusso also found the back of the net for the first time in her young collegiate career to put the finishing touches on a superb Spartan effort from start to finish.
