Big Third Quarter Powers #10 Spartans to Victory Over Haverford

YORK, Pa. - A five-goal third quarter part of a seven-goal Spartan run led to a 16-9 win for No. 10 York women's lacrosse at home on Saturday over Haverford.

A key seven-goal Spartan from the end of the second quarter through the end of the third made all the difference in what was a seesaw battle to that point.

(RV) Haverford 4-3
#10 York 3-2

How It Happened
The Spartans jumped out to a 2-0 lead less than two minutes into the game with a pair of tallies by Teresa Matthias 30 seconds apart. Kiersten Blanchard tallied a pair of her own to extend the Spartan lead to 4-1 with 5:08 left in the first quarter. The Fords rallied back and scored two unanswered goals, including one on the woman-up advantage, to cut the deficit to one heading into the second.

York held Haverford scoreless through the first 10 minutes of the second quarter while the Spartans ripped off three-straight goals. The pair trend continued for the Spartans with Zoe Kluegel scoring twice during that span. Once again, the Fords managed to take a bite out of the Spartan lead with two goals of their own, but Sydney Mentzer came through for York with a pair of goals in the final two minutes as the York owned a 9-5 advantage heading into halftime.

Mentzer's tallies sparked a seven-goal run for York that stretched late into the third quarter and gave York an insurmountable 14-5 lead. Haverford managed to steal a goal with 37 seconds left in the third quarter and went on to score three more over the course of the fourth quarter. The Fords held the Spartans scoreless for over 15 minutes of game time and kept chopping, but the hill was just too high to climb for Haverford despite a valiant effort down the stretch.

Notes
