#12 Amherst Outlasts #13 Spartans at Mustang Classic

Vinny Facciponti records 22 faceoff wins for second-straight day

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The 12th-ranked Amherst men's lacrosse team handed the 13th-ranked Spartans their first loss at the Mustang Classic since 2019 in a 19-16 slugfest on Saturday.

The Mammoths jumped on the Spartans early with a 5-2 first quarter run. The Spartans battled back to tie the game four times, but could never regain the lead after scoring the game's first goal.

A day after setting the program's single-game record for faceoff wins, senior Vinny Facciponti turned around and did it again, winning 22 of 39 faceoff attempts on Saturday.

#12 Amherst 3-1
#13 York 2-4

How It Happened
The Spartans started fast with Jack Grayson finding the back of the net 50 seconds after Vinny Facciponti's opening faceoff win. From that point on, York would go scoreless for 12 minutes while the Mammoths racked up five-straight tallies. The Spartans got back on the board with 1:50 left when Will Harnick cashed in on York's second man-up opportunity of the quarter. Amherst dominated the ground ball battle in the period, 10-3, and turned the ball over just once to York's six.

The Spartans hit the comeback trail as the second quarter unfolded and scored three-straight with tallies by Davis Fisher, Ethan Greene and Ryan Kazella to knot the game up 5-5 with 4:19 before halftime. After coming up empty on their first eight possessions of the quarter, the Mammoths went two-for-two to end the period and take a 7-5 edge into halftime.

The two teams combined for 13 goals in the third quarter with York winning that battle, 7-6, but Amherst still maintained the overall lead, 13-12, by quarter's end. Ian Callinan registered a game-high four saves in the period, while Facciponti won nine of 14 faceoffs. Amherst's three-goal in the middle of the period that spanned just 87 seconds proved to be the difference in an otherwise even quarter with both teams matching blow for blow.

The Spartans tied the score twice early in the fourth quarter, but another three-goal Mammoth once again proved costly as Amherst went ahead 17-14 with 8:21 left. The Mammoths went on to win four of the final five faceoffs to suffocate the Spartan offense and snap York's four-game win streak at the Mustang Classic.
