#13 Spartans Too Much for F&M at Mustang Classic

Vinny Facciponti wins 22 faceoffs to set new program record

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - A 9-2 first half lead made the difference in a 16-10 victory for No. 13 York men's lacrosse over Franklin & Marshall Friday on day one of the Mustang Classic hosted by Stevenson University.

The Spartans ran away to an seven-goal halftime lead with a 7-1 second quarter run fueled by four Will Harnick goals in the period. 13 second-half turnovers opened the door for the Diplomats who fought back to cut the deficit to three with 7:01 left to play, but the hill was too high to climb as the Spartans prevailed in the end.

Senior Vinny Facciponti played a huge role in York's success as he won 22 of 28 faceoffs to set a new single-game program record. Facciponti went a perfect 8-for-8 and 14-for-15 in the second half to help slow down a hot Diplomat offense that out-scored the Spartans in the final two quarters.

How It Happened
Ben Mayer notched the game's first tally just 54 seconds after the opening faceoff. After a trio of great saves by F&M goalie Sage Garito, the Diplomat offense returned the favor to the netminder as Will Mulligan tied the game up with a harsh angle shot just inside the left post with 9:09 left in the opening period. After a five-minute scoreless stretch, Mayer changed that with a bounce shot past Garito for his second goal of the quarter. Both teams had chances in the final minute with York getting a pair of shots off and F&M narrowly missing out on a goal in the closing seconds as a Tommy Garofalo shot from the doorstep went just wide of the cage.

The Spartans started quickly to start the second quarter as Jack Grayson finished off a give-and-go from Jacob Wilhelm 35 seconds in to extend the Spartan lead to 3-1. Wilhelm got a goal of his own a few minutes later with a nifty turnaround shot to finish off a feed from Ames Clark York moved ahead, 4-2. From that point on, it was the Will Harnick show as the Spartan senior attackman ripped off four-straight tallies, highlighted by a behind-the-back goal on the man-advantage. Michael Russo joined the scoring barrage with 1:13 left in the quarter as he snuck a shot past Garito from close range after receiving a feed from Grayson at the point. The Spartans ended the second quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 9-2 advantage into the halftime break.

Harnick continued his run of destruction with yet another goal less than four minutes into the third quarter to extend a seven-goal Spartan run and extend the York to 10-2. Suddenly, the tables turned and the Diplomats went on to score four-straight over the seven minutes to cut the deficit to four with 4:23 left in the third. Despite Vinny Facciponti and the Spartans winning all eight third-quarter faceoffs, the game remained tight deep into the third. A big reason why the game tightened up, despite the faceoff success, was the seven costly turnovers York committed in the third quarter. The Spartans would eventually snap out of their slump and tally a pair of goals in the final 61 seconds of the third courtesy of Mayer and Ryan Kazella to swell the lead to six heading into the fourth.

Facciponti went on to win the first five faceoffs of the fourth quarter, but only two directly resulted in goals. The Spartans turned it over on their first five-straight possessions to open the quarter which resulted in a three-goal run for the Dips who cut the deficit dangerously close, 12-9, with 7:01 left. York rallied quickly with two goals 1:10 apart and managed to hold the F&M to just one goal the rest of the way to secure the win.

Up Next
The Spartans will take on No. 12 Amherst (2-1) to open up day two of the Mustang Classic at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
