How It Happened
• After a quiet first inning, the bottom of the second began with fireworks as Andrew Santarpia celebrated his return to the Spartan lineup with a bomb over the center field wall to put York up 1-0. That proved to just be the beginning in the inning. Jacob Deimling drew a walk and Brendan Martin followed with a double off the left field wall to put Spartans at second and third. Connor Pickle was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Brian Jakubek made his return to the lineup and was promptly hit by another pitch to drive in a run. Robby Elzinga plated the fourth run of the inning with a sacrifice fly. The Lions got the second out on a fielder's choice but York wasn't done. Michael Tinneny singled through the left side to score the fifth run of the frame. Santarpia then capped the inning with a double deep to left center for the 7-0 lead.
• That would be more than enough for Spartan starter Zach Reed as he was brilliant for seven innings for the Green and White. Reed struck out a career-high ten as he scattered five hits in his shutout performance.
• York struck for four more in the fourth as Deimling had an RBI single followed by an absolute three-run moon shot to left field from Martin as the lead grew to 11-0.
• The offensive onslaught continued in the sixth with another big inning. Deimling, Lucas Prendergast, Pickle, and Jakubek had RBIs. Elzinga then hit a two-run rocket home run down the right field line to push the lead to 17-0.
• The Lions broke up the shutout in the top of the eighth with a Patrick Healey home run down the left field line for his first collegiate hit.
• York answered right back as they plated five in the bottom of the eighth. Chris Nesensohn had an RBI single to open the scoring. Aaron Hershberger and Cade Hollingsworth both had sacrifice flies to score runs while Chris Betler ripped a two run triple to cap the scoring.
