Pivotal Second Quarter Propels #9 Bullets Past #10 Spartans

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The No. 10 York women's lacrosse squad dropped their second-straight bout with a top-10 team this season in a 19-9 loss at Gettysburg on Wednesday afternoon.

After a back-and-forth first quarter, the Bullets turned the tide in their favor with a 7-0 run that spanned the end of the first quarter to the start of the third, fueled by a 4-0 second quarter performance. The Spartans fought back to cut the deficit to three (10-7) with 3:57 left in the third quarter, but Gettysburg slammed the door shut with a 9-2 run to end the game.

#9 Gettysburg 3-3

How It Happened
The Bullets edged the Spartans, 4-3, at the end of one quarter of play. York scored the first, third and fifth goals of the quarter, while Gettysburg scored the second, fourth and sixth goals before Gabi Connor broke the pattern with a tally under four minutes left to put the Bullets up by one.

The tide turned severely in Gettysburg's favor in the second quarter as the Bullets blanked the Spartans, 4-0, to take an 8-3 lead into halftime. After coming up empty on their first three possessions of the period, Gettysburg struck twice less than 60 seconds apart to jump start their second-quarter onslaught. The Spartans turned the ball over five times on their eight second-quarter possessions and had two of their three total shots turned away by Bullet netminder Gill Cortese.

The Spartans built up a counter attack in the third with three-straight goals to trim the Gettysburg lead down to three only to have the Bullets end the quarter on a 3-0 run of their own to swell the lead back up to six. Following a McKenna Seashole save and a Bullet turnover on the next Gettysburg possession, the door opened for York and Zoe Kluegel capitalized with a free-position tally with 5:41 left. Kiersten Blanchard won the ensuing draw and set up Kluegel for another goal 67 seconds after her previous tally. Blanchard also won the next draw and drew a card which put the Spartans on the woman-up. Sydney Mentzer made the penalty hurt as she found the back of the net with a free-position goal with York on the advantage.

Menzter's tally forced the Bullets to take a timeout as they saw their lead whittled down to three with 3:57 left. Out of the break, Gettysburg won the next three draws and pumped in three unanswered tallies to take a 13-7 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

The Bullets won the first two draws of the fourth quarter and put two more tallies on the board to take an eight-goal lead less than two minutes into the period. Kluegel managed to get her fourth goal on the board and Anya Litofsky found the back of the net as the two sides combined for four goals in the first 3:35 of the final quarter. From that point on, it was all Gettysburg as the Bullets scored four-straight to end the game while holding York to just three shots in the final 11:25.
