Zumbrum Notches 30 as Spartans Win at Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The York College women's basketball team picked up their second-straight conference win as they led wire to wire in a 63-51 triumph at Stevenson on Wednesday night.

The win keeps York very much in the hunt for a MAC Commonwealth postseason spot. The Spartans moved within a game behind Stevenson in the loss column with two left to play. The Mustangs currently hold the fifth and final playoff spot.

Bradi Zumbrum led all players with a new career-high 30 points on an 11-for-16 shooting night and a 7-for-7 performance from the free throw line.

How It Happened
  • The Spartans put together one of their best opening quarters of the season as they held a 14-8 lead through the first 10 minutes of play. York took advantage of eight first-quarter turnovers by Stevenson and compiled a 7-2 margin over the Mustangs in points off turnovers in the quarter.
  • York limited Stevenson to just four points through the first seven minutes of play as the Spartan defense limited the Mustangs to just five field goal attempts during that span and eight total in the first quarter. York shot 45.5% from the field in the opening frame led by a  nine-point effort from Bradi Zumbrum on a 3-for-4 start from the field.
  • Zumbrum remained hot to start the second quarter as she scored all of York's first eight points of the period as the Spartans opened up a 22-13 lead midway through the quarter. York held the Mustangs to just two field goal attempts through the first five minutes of the second as Stevenson turned it over four more times.
  • After a two-minute scoring drought, Tori Geitner reignited the scoring for York with a three-pointer with 3:24 left and started a 12-6 Spartan run to end the second quarter. Geitner led the Spartans with six points on that run as York owned a 34-19 halftime lead. The Spartans took advantage of 13 first-half turnovers by the Mustangs by scoring 14 points off those turnovers.
  • The Mustangs connected on two of their first three shot attempts to start the third quarter and cut the Spartan lead down to 10 with 8:29 remaining. The Spartans answered back on their ensuing possession as a Zumbrum layup snapped an 0-for-4 start to the quarter for the Green and White. York would go on to score six unanswered, capped by an Alyssa Hocker three-pointer, as the Spartans opened up a 43-24 lead with 4:46 left in the third.
  • The Mustangs had the upper hand for the remainder of the third quarter as they out-scored the Spartans 12-6 to cut the York lead down to 49-36 at the end of three. The Spartans were plagued by a trio of turnovers in less than a minute down the stretch while the Mustangs limited York to just four field goal attempts in the last four minutes of the third.
  • The two teams combined for an astonishing 23 points in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter. The Mustangs owned a13-10 edge during that stretch as the Spartan lead once again shrunk to 10 (59-49). Stevenson's Laci Johnson led all players with nine points to start the fourth.
  • After a breakneck scoring pace to start the fourth, the pace slowed considerably over the final five-and-a-half minutes. Stevenson's hopes of a comeback suddenly went up in smoke as the Mustangs finished the game 1-for-9 from the field, including a 1-for-5 effort from three. The Spartans were limited to just two field goals of their own during that span, both of which came from the hands of Hocker who accounted for the final five points of the game for York in their 63-51 victory.

Up Next
The Spartans return to Wolf Gym Tuesday night to face Hood at 8 p.m. in their home game of the season.

Notes
Bradi Zumbrum became just the eighth different Spartan in program history to score 30 or more points in a game … her 30 points is tied for ninth on the program's single-game record list … Zumbrum joins Brittany Hicks (2013 & 2014) and Haley Luckabaugh (2020) as the only Spartans in the last 10 years with 30–point performances.
