Santarpia's Double Gives York Win Number One

Reed and Shaffer combine to shine on the mound for York

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – York sophomore Andrew Santarpia stroked a game-winning double with two outs in the top of the tenth to lead the Spartans to their first win of the year, an exciting 3-2 win over Manchester on Sunday.
The Spartans struck early but then the offense went sixth innings without a hit before back to back hits in the tenth lifted the Spartans to the win.

How It Happened
• York opened the scoring in the second as Brendan Martin drew a lead-off walk. He stole second, moved to third on a Connor Pickle ground out to second and scored on a wild pitch.
• York added a second run in the third as the Spartans opened the inning with three straight hits. Michael Tinneny plated lead-off hitter Robby Elzinga with an RBI fielder's choice. The Spartans left the bases loaded as they couldn't add to the lead.
• Manchester got to Spartan starter Zach Reed in the bottom of the fifth. Austin Knowles doubled down the left field line. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Jared Holley sacrifice fly to center.
• Manchester tied the game in the bottom of the sixth as Zach White tripled down the right field line. Despite the Spartans playing the infield in, a weak ground ball to second scored White, tying the game at two.
• Reed faced a Manchester uprising in the bottom of the seventh. Knowles doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning. After failing to get a sacrifice bunt down, Holley struck out but advanced to first on a swinging wild pitch. Gavin Gleason bunted into a fielder's choice as Knowles was nabbed going to third for out number one. A second fielder's choice left runners at the corners. Reed got a strikeout to get out of the frame unscathed.
• Manchester got back-to-back two out singles in the bottom of the ninth but Spartan reliever Bryce Shaffer got a strikeout to send the game to the tenth.
• Manchester quickly got the first two outs of the tenth but Tinneny singled up the middle to get a runner on. Clean-up hitter Andrew Santarpia then smoked a double down the left field line, scoring Tinneny with the game-winner. Shaffer set Manchester down in order in the tenth to earn the win.
