#6 Men’s Lacrosse Falls in OT at #19 W&L to Open Season

Generals overcome five-goal deficit and score five unanswered to finish the game

LEXINGTON, Va. - The sixth-ranked York men's lacrosse team dropped their 2023 season opener in a 11-10 overtime defeat at No. 19 Washington and Lee on Saturday afternoon.

The Generals erased a four-goal halftime deficit and out-scored York 7-2 through the last three periods, including a five-goal run to end the game, to pull off the opening day upset over the visiting Spartans. Hudson Pokorny netted the game-winner with 1:54 left in overtime which capped off a five-point performance by the Generals' senior captain.

Will Harnick and Ben Mayer led the Green and White with four points each on the day with Harnick leading the team with four goals. Ames Clark paced the squad with three assists. Vinny Facciponti led all players at the faceoff dot with a 13-for-23 performance to go along with a game-high seven ground balls. Ian Callinan notched 12 saves in his first-career start for the Spartans.

How It Happened
The Spartans pumped in goals on their first three possessions of the game to take a 3-0 lead less than five minutes after the opening whistle. Turnovers caused by Ethan Greene and Nick Biava turned to goals on the other end for York during that opening run. The Generals fought back to cut the deficit to two (4-2) as they scored with 34 seconds left in the first quarter, but the Spartans had the final say as Jackson Shields connected with Ben Mayer with just three ticks left as York owned a 5-2 lead after one. York owned an 8-4 advantage in ground balls and came out on the positive side of a 6-3 turnover margin at the end of the first quarter.

York took advantage of two more General turnovers to begin the second quarter and found the back of the net twice more courtesy of Will Harnick and Eric Burbank to take a five-goal advantage (7-2) with 11:15 left in the second. The Spartans would go on to turn the ball over on six of their next seven possessions, but they kept the damage to a minimum as the Generals managed to score just once during that span as the first half winded down.

Another Harnick tally pushed the Spartan lead back up to five (8-3) with 1:47 left in the second quarter, but W&L won the ensuing faceoff and scored to cut the deficit to 8-4 heading into halftime. The Generals won the second quarter ground ball battle (6-5) while the two sides drew even in turnovers (6-6) and faceoffs (3-3) in the period.

The Generals had the jump on York coming out of the halftime break and dominated time of possession in the third quarter. W&L limited the Spartans to just four shots in the period while the Generals scored three times on 12 shots. The two teams combined for three goals in the final 28 seconds of the third with scoring twice, but the Generals scored a back-breaker with just one second left to cut the Spartan lead to three (10-7) heading into the fourth quarter.

The momentum continued to shift into W&L's favor as the fourth quarter unfolded and was boosted by a pair of early saves by General netminder Ryan Boyd on York's first two possessions. The Generals struck twice in the first five minutes to pull within one goal of the lead (10-9).

York turned the ball over a game-high eight times in the fourth quarter and held to just four shots, but still clung to a one-goal lead with time winding down. Eventually the Generals got the break they were longing for and scored the equalizer with 47 seconds left in regulation on a Will Schnorr tally. W&L won the ensuing faceoff and rushed the net, but Ian Callinan was up to the task and made a big save to send the game into OT.

York won the faceoff to open overtime, but turnovers once again plagued the Spartans as they coughed it up on their only two possessions of the period. Those miscues opened the door for the Generals who took full advantage. Following a restart, Hudson Pokorny beat his man from behind the net and slipped a high shot past Callinan from a harsh angle on the right post for the game-winner.

Up Next
The Spartans will make their home debut on Wednesday night against Ursinus. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at Kinsley Field.

Notes
York suffered their first loss on opening day since 2014 when they fell, 9-8, in overtime to then No. 1 ranked defending national champion Stevenson … the Spartans are now 10-2 in season openers under head coach Brandon Childs who took over for the start of the 2012 season; five of those wins came against ranked opponents … the Spartans also saw their seven-game win streak against the Generals snapped as York now leads the all-time series 7-4 … three of the last five meetings between these two teams have been decided by one goal margins … the loss for York is just their sixth away from home since the start of the 2018 season as they went 9-1 last year in games played away from Kinsley Field.
