SALEM, VA – The York College women's basketball team dropped an 81-58 decision to the host Roanoke College Maroons in the opening round of the Susan Dunagan Holiday Classic in Salem, Virginia on Friday afternoon.
The Maroons used a 32-8 second quarter to turn a seven-point deficit into a 42-25 halftime lead. It was a lead that they would keep the remainder of the game.
The Spartans fall to 5-4 overall while the Maroons improve to 7-4.

How It Happened
• The Spartans got off to a good start in the opening quarter as they led 8-5 midway through the opening period of play. With York up 8-7, the Green and White finished the quarter with a 9-3 run with four different Spartans scoring during the spurt. York took a 17-10 lead to the second quarter.
• The Spartans went ice cold early in the second while the Maroons got hot from the floor. Roanoke blitzed the Spartans with a game-changing 18-2 run as they turned their seven-point deficit into a nine-point lead. The Maroons went 7-for-11 from the floor during the run including 1-for-1 from three and 3-for-3 at the line. Conversely, York was 1-for-4 from the floor with four turnovers as the run covered the first 5:28 of the quarter.
Alyssa Hocker hit a three to slow the bleeding but the Maroons reopened the wound with a 14-3 run to end the quarter. Overall, Roanoke outscored York 32-8 in the quarter.
• In the opening half, the Maroons shot 50% (12-for-24) from the floor, 3-for-5 from three and 5-for-8 from the line. The Spartans had nine turnovers which led to 19 Maroon points in the second quarter alone. Roanoke out-rebounded the Spartans 18-6 in the quarter.
• York tried to climb back into the game as they started the third quarter with an 8-3 run. The Maroons got back-to-back buckets to push the lead back to 16 with 5:49 left in the period. The Maroons continued to hold York at arm's length as their lead bounced between 13 and 18 points over the final four minutes of the quarter. Roanoke took a 60-43 lead after 30 minutes of play.
• Roanoke began the fourth with an 8-2 run to push the lead to 23 points with 8:02 left in the game. The Maroons continued their strong play as they built the lead to a game-high 26 points on a Maggie Houpt three pointer with 1:32 left in the game before settling for the 23 point victory.

The Spartans finished the game shooting 37.1% (32-for-62) from the floor including 22.2% (6-for-27) from three and 6-for-11 (54.5%) from the stripe … Roanoke converted 32-of-71 (45.1%) from the field, 50% (10-for-20) from three and 50% (7-for-14) from the free throw line … the Maroons held a 49-35 advantage on the glass which led to a 24-10 margin in second chance points … York committed 23 turnovers which led to 30 Maroon points off the Spartan miscues … Roanoke had a 32-28 in paint points … Roanoke had 22 assists to just 11 for York.

The meeting between the two programs is the second all-time as each team has won a game … the last time the teams played was on November 17, 2012 at the Daly Sevens Hotels Classic hosted by Guilford as the Spartans posted a 57-34 win … the 81 points allowed were the most by a Spartan opponent this year … the previous high in points allowed was 68 against McDaniel and that game went to overtime … York had allowed just 46.3 points per game in their last three contests … Roanoke's 45.1% mark from the floor marks a season high for a Spartan opponent … the Maroons ten three-pointers also were a season-high from a York opponent … the 14 rebound deficit was a season-high for the Spartans … the Spartans' 23 turnovers were a season-high … York did block seven shots in the game … the Spartans were led by the duo of
