SALEM, VA – The York College women's basketball team closed out the 2023 portion of their schedule with a 58-53 win over Hollins University in the second round of the Susan Dunagan Holiday Classic hosted by Roanoke College on Saturday afternoon in Salem, VA.
The Spartans had a big second quarter and would go on to earn their sixth win of the year.
York improves to 6-4 overall while Hollins is now 4-7.
 
How It Happened
• The game was back and forth early in the first quarter before the Spartans pushed out to an 11-6 lead on an Alyssa Hocker three-point play. Hollins ended the quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 15-11 lead after 10 minutes of play.
• Hollins continued the run to start the second quarter as Cabria Mutz hit a jumper to put the Green and Gold up 17-11. York trimmed their deficit to one with five straight points with Taylor Brenneman netting four of those points. Hollins pushed the lead back to three before York took a 20-19 lead on a Hocker lay-up with 4:50 left in the half. The two teams took turns with the lead over the next two minutes before the Spartans scored five of the final eight points of the quarter to take a three-point lead to the break.
• Hollins started strong in the third as they took their final lead of the game on a Mutz three-point play just 2:04 into the second half. The Spartans then fashioned a 10-1 spurt that gave York a 40-32 lead. The York lead vacillated between five and eight points before the Spartans settled for a 45-38 lead heading to the fourth.
• York got a three pointer from Taylor Burda to open the final quarter as the lead grew to 10 points for the Spartans. That lead would be matched four minutes later at 51-41 on a Georgia Panopoulos free throw. Hollins ripped off six straight points to cut the York lead to four with 4:24 left in the game. The Spartans answered with five quick points to increase the lead back to nine with 3:28 left. The teams would go scoreless over the next four minutes before Makenna Zimmerman hit a pair of free throws to push the lead to a game-high 11 with 1:05 left in the game. Hollins made it interesting with six points in the final 47 seconds to provide for the Spartans' five-point margin of victory.

The Spartans finished the game shooting 39.2% from the floor, 20% (3-for-15) from three and 62.5% (15-for-24) from the stripe … Hollins shot 29.7% from the field, 20.8% (5-for-24) from distance and 50% (10-for-20) from the stripe … York won the battle on the boards 45-40 … the Spartans committed 21 turnovers which Hollins turned into 21 points … York held a 24-18 edge in paint points … York had a 10-2 advantage in fast break points … there were three ties and nine lead changes in the game … York failed to block a shot for the first time this year.

The meeting between the two schools is the first in program history … York finished the tournament 1-1 … York is 6-4 in non-conference contests with one more non-league game to go at Penn State Altoona on January 15 … the win is just the second win by single digits for the Spartans as the other four all came by double digits … the Spartans held Hollins to 29.7% shooting and they are the fourth opponent that has shot under 30% against the Green and White … the Spartans made a season-low three triples in the win … York is now 5-0 when out-rebounding their opponent … York had another 21 turnovers as they had 44 turnovers during the tournament … York had a season-low four steals in the game … the Spartans held their fifth opponent to 55 points or less … senior Alyssa Hocker was named to the All-Tournament team after she recorded the double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds in her 33 minutes of work … Georgia Panopoulos came off the bench to add 13 points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal in 30 minutes of play … Taylor Brenneman tied Panopoulos for high scoring honors as she notched a career-high 13 points to go along with a career-high eight rebounds … Brenneman was 5-for-8 from the floor and 3-for-4 from the line … Taylor Burda was the fourth Spartan in double figures with 12 points … Brooklyn Naylor chipped in with four points, five rebounds, four assists and a steal.

The Spartans open MAC Commonwealth play on Wednesday evening against Alvernia University at Wolf Gymnasium. The game will be the first of a doubleheader and tip off is set for 6:00 pm.
