SALEM, VA – The York College women's basketball team closed out the 2023 portion of their schedule with a 58-53 win over Hollins University in the second round of the Susan Dunagan Holiday Classic hosted by Roanoke College on Saturday afternoon in Salem, VA.
The Spartans had a big second quarter and would go on to earn their sixth win of the year.
York improves to 6-4 overall while Hollins is now 4-7.

How It Happened
• The game was back and forth early in the first quarter before the Spartans pushed out to an 11-6 lead on an
Alyssa Hocker three-point play. Hollins ended the quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 15-11 lead after 10 minutes of play.
• Hollins continued the run to start the second quarter as Cabria Mutz hit a jumper to put the Green and Gold up 17-11. York trimmed their deficit to one with five straight points with
Taylor Brenneman netting four of those points. Hollins pushed the lead back to three before York took a 20-19 lead on a Hocker lay-up with 4:50 left in the half. The two teams took turns with the lead over the next two minutes before the Spartans scored five of the final eight points of the quarter to take a three-point lead to the break.
• Hollins started strong in the third as they took their final lead of the game on a Mutz three-point play just 2:04 into the second half. The Spartans then fashioned a 10-1 spurt that gave York a 40-32 lead. The York lead vacillated between five and eight points before the Spartans settled for a 45-38 lead heading to the fourth.
• York got a three pointer from
Taylor Burda to open the final quarter as the lead grew to 10 points for the Spartans. That lead would be matched four minutes later at 51-41 on a
Georgia Panopoulos free throw. Hollins ripped off six straight points to cut the York lead to four with 4:24 left in the game. The Spartans answered with five quick points to increase the lead back to nine with 3:28 left. The teams would go scoreless over the next four minutes before
Makenna Zimmerman hit a pair of free throws to push the lead to a game-high 11 with 1:05 left in the game. Hollins made it interesting with six points in the final 47 seconds to provide for the Spartans' five-point margin of victory.
