Huge Fourth Quarter Lifts Women's Basketball to Victory

The Spartans outscored the Chargers 22-9 in the final period

LANCASTER, PA – The York College women's basketball team got back on the winning side of the ledger with a 78-64 non-conference win at Lancaster Bible College on Saturday.
With the Spartans holding a one-point lead after three quarters of play, York started the fourth quarter with a 20-2 run to turn a close game into a more lopsided affair.
The Spartans improve to 2-2 overall while the Chargers fall to 1-3.
 
How It Happened
• The Spartans fell behind 4-0 early but ripped off seven straight points including a three from Breana Grim with 6:18 left in the first. The scoring paced picked up in the middle of the quarter as the teams had a back-and-forth flurry with the Spartans maintaining the lead until Alaysha Iwais hit a bucket to put the Chargers up 12-11. York responded quickly with a Taylor Burda triple that started an 8-2 run but Lancaster Bible converted a deep three at the horn as York had a 19-17 lead after one quarter of play.
• Both teams shot 7-17 from the floor in the opening ten minutes while York was 2-for-5 from three while LBC was 1-for-6.
• The Chargers got off to a quick start in the second quarter as they ripped off an 11-2 spurt over the first four minutes of the period. The Spartans struggled to take care of the ball in the second as they had four turnovers in the opening three minutes of the quarter. Senior Alyssa Hocker finally halted the run with a corner three, cutting the Spartan deficit to 28-24. York tied the game at 28 on a Georgia Panopoulos lay-up with 4:18 remaining in the quarter. The Chargers answered with a 9-4 spurt to take 37-32 lead with 2:30 left in the half. Sophomore Carrie Smith came off the bench and ripped off a personal 5-0 run to tie the game at 37. However, the Spartans gave up another late three pointer, this one to Raven Hunter, as the Chargers took a 40-37 lead at the break.
• The Chargers shot a blistering 55.6% from the floor in the second including 3-for-6 from distance.
• The Spartans came out of the break with an entirely different starting lineup and that group kept the Green and White even. York cut their deficit to one on a pair of Mackenzie Brezovec free throws with 4:44 left in the quarter. A pair of Jenna Dombach free throws gave the Chargers a three-point lead but Burda drilled a triple to tie the game at 47 with 3:42 remaining. The teams went back and forth over the final 2:40 of the quarter as the Spartans held a very slight 9-8 advantage in scoring to take a 56-55 lead to the fourth quarter.
• York turned the game around in the fourth quarter as they started the period on a 20-2 run that gave the Spartans a 76-57 lead with 3:53 left in the game. York ended the quarter outscoring Lancaster Bible 22-9 which led to the 14-point win. York shot 45% in the fourth quarter including a pair of threes.

York finished the game shooting 40% (32-for-80) from the floor, 34.8% (8-for-23) from three and 54.5% (6-for-11) from the stripe … the Chargers shot 41.1% (23-for-56) from the field, 31.8% (7-for-22) from three and 73.3% (11-for-15) from the line … York dominated the glass as they held a 42-31 margin on the backboards … York had a 12-2 advantage in second chance points … the Green and White forced 23 Charger turnovers which they converted into 26 points … York overwhelmed LBC in the paint, holding a 46-16 edge in paint points … York's bench bunch had a 28-16 margin over their Charger counterparts.

York improves to 5-0 all-time against the Chargers … York has won four of the five games n by double figures … York attempted a season-high 80 field goals in the game … their 40% shooting was also a season high as were the 32 made field goals … the eight made three pointers ties them for a season high set in the Mary Washington contest … York earned a season-low 11 free throw attempts while they made a season low six from the stripe … the Spartans had a season-low 12 personal fouls … York dished out a season-high 23 assists while they had a season-low 12 turnovers … York placed four players in double figures led by Alyssa Hocker as she had a fantastic day with 15 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and four steals in her 22 minutes of work … Makenna Zimmerman added 12 points, four rebounds, three blocked shots and one assist in her 22 minutes of play … Taylor Burda chipped in with a well-rounded performance as she had 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals … Brooklyn Naylor had a season-high 10 points to go along with three rebounds for York ... Carrie Smith had a season-high seven points while fellow sophomore Rosalynn Diehl pulled in a season-best five rebounds.

The Spartans wrap up their current three game road trip with a trek to Selinsgrove, PA to face off against the Susquehanna University River Hawks in a non-conference contest. Tip time from OW Houts Gymnasium is set for 5:00 pm.
