Spartans Fall at Messiah to Cap Regular Season

GRANTHAM, Pa. - The Spartan volleyball closed out the regular season with a 3-1 loss at Messiah on Wednesday night. The loss gives York the fourth seed heading into the MAC Commonwealth postseason where they will travel to No. 1 seed Eastern next Wednesday for a semifinal round match.

Team Records
York 17-11 (4-3 MACC)
Messiah 20-7 (5-2 MACC)

How It Happened
  • The Falcons dominated the first set as they cruised to a 25-10 win. York had nothing going offensively as they produced just four kills to five attack errors for a -.034 attack percentage. Messiah hit efficiently with a .321 attack percentage and defended well with 17 digs in the set.
  • York rebounded and played much better in the second set, but Messiah managed to edge out a 25-22 victory. The Spartans trailed by as much as eight (13-5), but fought their way back to cut the deficit to one (22-21) on a 16-9 run before Messiah scored two-straight points to win the set. York tallied 10 kills on their comeback run led by a trio from Gianna Krinock to go along with a pair each from Abby Diehl and Morgan Nolte.
  • Both teams hit in the negative in set number three as York prevailed, 25-20. Tied 19-19, York took the lead for good on the fourth lead change of the set on a Nolte kill which sparked a 5-0 run aided by three Messiah errors. Nolte led York with two kills and assisted on four blocks as York defended the net extremely well with five total blocks in the set.
  • The Falcons rushed out to a 13-5 lead to start the fourth set and never trailed as they rolled to a match-clinching 25-18 victory. Trailing by 11 (23-12), the Spartans made a late flurry to cut the deficit to five on a six-point field by a pair of Krinock kills, but the comeback bid came up short as a Spartan service error followed by a Messiah ace abruptly ended the set.

Up Next
The Spartans will hit the road next Wednesday night to take on two-time defending MAC Commonwealth champion Eastern a semifinal round match slated to begin at 7 p.m.
