WAYNESBORO, PA – The York College men's golf squad had a fantastic Sunday at the Mason-Dixon Collegiate Classic as they shot 293 to finish second in the 17-team tournament. The Spartans finished one stroke back of team champion Dickinson as the Red Devils concluded the tournament with a two-day score of 593. The Spartans jumped six spots on Sunday as they were eighth after round one of the tournament.
Roanoke was one stroke back of York in third at 595. Franklin & Marshall (597) was fourth followed by the host Bullets (598) in fifth.
Junior
Matthew Salter led the way for the Green and White as he finished tied for first as he shot two-under 142 for the weekend. He lost the individual title on the match of cards but he was fantastic for York. After an even-par 72 on Saturday, Salter fired a two-under-par 70 on Sunday. He was one under on the front nine and matched that with a one-under 35 back nine. Salter accumulated seven birdies on his round. The 70 matched his career low round while the 142 set a new career best for a 36-hole tournament.
Fellow junior
Jason Velez continued his strong early season play as he tied for 15
th overall in the 93-player field. Velez was four-over on Saturday but trimmed four strokes off his score on Sunday with an even-par 72. He was even on both nines with two birdies, two bogeys and 14 pars on his Sunday round.
Sophomore
Jacob Fripp was the Spartans' third finisher as he tied for 30
th with a two-day total of 151. Fripp made a three-shot improvement on Sunday as he shot a two-over-par 74. Fripp shot a three-over 39 on the front but put up a one-under-par 35 on the inward nine for the Green and White.
Sophomore
Nate Myers made his season debut a successful one as he shot a tournament total of 153, tying for 37
th in the field. Myers shot a five-over 75 on Sunday with a three-over 39 on the front and a two-over 38 on the back.
Sophomore
Bennett Elgin was York's fifth tournament participant as he shot 164 for the weekend. Elgin made a two-stroke improvement Sunday over his Saturday score.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday when they head to Farmingdale, New York to play at the George Cangero Invitational played at Bethpage Red. The two-day tournament kicks off Saturday at noon.
