Women's Soccer Celebrates Seniors with Comeback Win

YORK, Pa. - The Spartan women's soccer squad erased a first half deficit with three second half tallies in a 3-1 conference victory over Stevenson at home on Saturday for their sixth-straight win.

After the Mustangs took the lead in the 12th minute, York steadily mounted pressure before Olivia Dingman netted the equalizer in the 67th minute of play. Ashlynn Weger headed in the eventual game-winner in the 81st minute as the Spartans out-shot Stevenson 10-0 in the second half.

Team Records
Stevenson 3-5-4 (0-1-1 MACC)
York 8-4-0 (2-0-0 MACC)

How It Happened
  • Stevenson struck first on a fortunate bounce in the 12th minute of play. Spartan keeper Madison O'Brien made a spectacular save on a rocket shot by Kayla Gerbes, but the rebound deflected directly to the waiting feet of Taylor Reider who knocked it home for her first tally of the year.
  • The frustrated Spartans came out of the halftime break firing, but were held off initially. Morgan Joyce had a point look on goal from eight yards out and blistered a shot that was turned away by Mustang keeper Courtney Wysokowski less than two minutes into the second half.
  • York remained persistent and finally broke through in the 67th minute. Olivia Dingman settled in the middle of the field, sidestepped a defender to create a shooting lane and unleashed a shot from 28 yards out that sailed into the upper left corner of the net for her second goal of the season.
  • York took the lead in the 81st minute of play on a diving header by Ashlynn Weger. Abby Brown started the play with a beautiful low cross into the box from the right side. Weger managed to dip down and head a spectacular strike past a diving Wysokowski.
  • Weger picked up her second point of the day when she played a through ball into the top of the box which allowed Meg Kalthof to gain a step on her defender and slip a shot past Wysokoski.

Up Next
The Spartans travel to No. 21 Misericordia on Wednesday for a big MAC crossover matchup.

Notes
The Spartans improve to 9-8-1 all-time against Stevenson … York's current six-game win streak matches the second-longest win streak in program history and is one win shy of tying the program record of seven (1998 & 2006).
