Men's Soccer Earns 4-1 Commonwealth Win over Stevenson

Noah Roche scores twice for the Spartans in the win

York, PA- The York College Spartan men's soccer squad earned a much-needed 4-1 win against the Stevenson Mustangs on Saturday afternoon in York. It was a game that produced some of the Spartans' best soccer all season on both sides of the ball.
After going scoreless in their previous two contests, the Green and White bounced back with their second-highest scoring effort this season. This win marks York's first MAC Commonwealth victory this season, which may be important for tournament implications in a very competitive league.
The Spartans improve to 3-4-3 overall and 1-1 in the league. The Mustangs fall to 1-7-4 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

How it Happened
• Both teams played each other tough to start, with no shots on goal being registered for over the first 25 minutes of game time. This changed when Noah Roche drew a foul in the box on Stevenson goalkeeper Nolen Olson-Warwick in the 26th minute. The ensuing penalty kick was converted by Luke Nall for his first goal of the year. Olson-Warwick's foul that drew a yellow card was the first of three for the Mustangs in the match.
• Roche followed up his previous effort with a goal in the 34th minute, delivering a strong left boot to the left side of the goal past the outstretched arms of Olson-Warwick for his first finish of this season. Roche played his first game this season up top after playing in the central defense for the first nine games of the year.
• York showed off their transition offense in the 42nd minute when Matt Martin took the ball on the Spartan side of the field and quickly turned it into a clean cross from the right side to a waiting Cace Oburn.  Oburn drilled in his first collegiate goal on a sensational play to give York the 3-0 lead.
• The Spartan backline and goalie Jake Bono, making his second start this season, combined to limit Stevenson to zero shots on goal in the first 45.
• Roche achieved his second career multi-goal game in the 87th minute, on a steal and score to notch the Spartans lone goal in the second half. Stevenson spoiled the shutout in the 89th minute as Brian Rogowski hit a brilliant bender inside the right post for the Mustangs lone tally.
• York finished the game with an 11-7 edge in total shots including a 6-2 margin in shots on goal. York also held a 4-2 margin in corner kicks in the win.
