Spartans Notch Tenth Home Victory in Saturday Tri-Match

YORK, Pa. - The Spartan volleyball squad won their tenth home victory of the season in Saturday's tri-match against Marymount and Cheyney. The Spartans rebounded from a 3-1 loss to Marymount in the opening match with a 3-0 victory over Cheyney in the final match of the day.

How It Happened
  • The Spartans and Saints swapped the lead four times before Marymount came from behind late on a 7-0 run to take the first set, 25-20. Myia Jeter fueled the late run for the Saints with a pair of kills and a pair of blocks. Kaitlyn Doyle also contributed a pair of kills on the set-clinching run and led all players with seven in the set.
  • York capitalized on a .730 sideout percentage and took advantage of Marymount's .148 attack to win the second set, 25-19.
  • York and Marymount changed the lead a match-high six times before the Saints edged out a 26-24 victory. York held the largest lead of the set at 10-4 as the two sides tied nine times. The Spartans took a 24-23 lead, but could not hold on as Marymount ended the set on a 3-0 run.
  • The Saints squeaked out another close victory in set number four, 25-23, to clinch the match. Marymount overcame a three-point deficit and scored five unanswered points to end the set and pull out the comeback victory. Jeter notched a pair of kills for the Saints on their final run and led all players with six in the set. Morgan Nolte led York with four kills and two blocks in the final set.

How It Happened
  • The Spartans led the first set wire-to-wire on their way to a 25-10 win. York opened the set on a 7-0 run with three Abby Diehl service aces and a pair of Gianna Krinock kills. The Spartans put the match out of reach as they extended their lead to 16-1 with Megan Holmes ripping off nine consecutive serves with five aces.
  • York led the second set from start to finish en route to a 25-11 victory. Ahead 14-10, the Spartans slammed the door as they finished the set on an 11-1 run with Holmes fueling the run with two kills and two aces.
  • The two sides went back-and-forth early with three ties and one lead change before York eventually rolled to a 25-14 victory. The Wolves made a late push as they trimmed a nine-point deficit down to just six (19-13) as they were aided by three-straight Spartan hitting errors. The Spartans quickly righted the ship with a trio of Alyssa Mott service aces combined with a pair of kills from Jennifer Taylor and Morgan Nolte which clinched the match.

The Spartans will be back on their home hardwood on Tuesday night against Widener for their last home match of the regular season.

The Spartans are now 9-9 against Marymount dating back to 1997 with a mark of 4-3 at home ... the Saints currently own a three-match win streak over the Spartans … York is 2-0 all-time against Cheyney as the two programs met for the first time this season … York has won 10 matches at home twice since the start of the 2021 season with a record of 24-8 on their home floor during that span … York's 26 service aces against Cheyney are the most by a Spartan team dating back to 2010 … Megan Holmes led York in kills (16) and a kills/set average (2.29) and service aces (8) on the day … Abby Diehl racked up a team-high 38 assists with a 5.43 assists/set average on the day … Morgan Nolte led the team with four blocks and Jasmine Doguin led the squad with 15 digs.
