YORK, PA – The York College men's golf squad concluded their 2023 fall season with a win at the one-day Spartan Fall Invitational at Royal Manchester Golf Links in York.
The Spartans fired a team score of 296. Albright finished second at 313 followed by the defending MAC Champion Hood College Blazers as they finished the day with a score of 321.
The Spartans finished the day with the first four finishers in the event. Junior
Jason Velez capped a brilliant fall season with a two-under-par 70. Velez started his round on hole number 13 and he actually bogeyed back-to-back holes to begin his round. After a par on 15, Velez got back to level par with back-to-back birdies on 16 and 17. He made par on 18 and made the turn at even par. After a par on one, he bogeyed two and then birdied three. After five straight pars, Velez birdied nine to finish the front nine with a one-under 35. He birdied 10 and finished with a pair of pars to shoot 35 on the back for his 70. Velez's fall saw him average 72.50 in 10 rounds. He had a low round of 68 and earned one win, three top-five finishes and he finished inside the top ten in five of his six tournaments this fall.
Bennett Elgin, who was playing as an individual, fired an even par 72 for the day to finish second on . He was scorching on the front nine with three birdies in four holes. He had a bogey and double on the back for his even par round. Elgin's 72 was his low round for the fall.
Matthew Salter finished third as he carded a one-over-par 73. Salter started on 12 as he ripped off five pars to start his round. He had a hiccup on 17 with a bogey before parring 18. He made the turn and registered a par on one. He bogeyed two, birdied three and then had par on four and five. He doubled six but bounced back with a birdie on seven. A bogey on eight was followed by an eagle three on the ninth hole. He finished the round with two pars to earn the third place finish. Salter, like Velez, had a very good fall as he finished with a 72.9 scoring average, just 0.4 strokes behind Velez. Salter finished in the top ten in all six tournaments he played in this fall.
Jacob Fripp finished fourth in the tournament as he carded a two-over-par 74. Fripp started on 11 and was four-over-par on his first eight holes. He made the turn and recorded birdies on the fourth and eighth holes to shoot a two-under 34 on the front nine. He notched a par on ten to finish his round as he shot 40 on the second nine. Fripp played in all ten fall rounds as he notched a 75.1 scoring average. He had two top five and two top-ten rounds during the fall.
Thomas O'Connell was the next Spartan to finish as he placed tied for sixth. O'Connell, who was playing as one of York's individual players, shot a five-over-par 77. O'Connell shot 39 on the front and followed that with a 38 on the back.
Gavin Ganter was York's fourth tournament scorer as he tied for ninth with a seven-over 79. Ganter started on ten and got off the tough start with two bogeys and one double. He had another bogey on 14 as he finished with a 41 on the back nine. He had three bogeys on the first four holes of his second nine but after four pars, ended his fall season with a birdie on nine to shoot 38. Ganter finished the fall with a scoring average of 76.6.
Nate Myers was the final member of York's Saturday starting lineup. He finished tied for 14
th as he shot an 83. Myers shot a 41 on the front and a 42 on the back. Myers finished the fall with a scoring average of 77.0 in six rounds in four tournaments.
Freshman
Alexander Jolakian made his collegiate debut in the tournament and finished the day with an 85. He shot a 45 on the first nine and followed that with a 40 on the back nine.
The Spartans won three fall championships, tied for first in another tournament and also had a second place finish during the campaign. York finished with a fall scoring average of 295 as they had eight rounds under 299. The Spartans shot a season-best 2855 in the second round of the SU Invitational on September 25.
York returns to action in March and will play in the MAC Commonwealth championships in late April.
