Kalthof Strikes Twice Again as Spartans Defeat Eastern

Freshman forward Meg Kalthoff has scored the last York five goals

YORK, Pa. - A pair of Meg Kalthof goals lifted the York women's soccer team to a 2-1 conference victory over Eastern at home on Tuesday night.

Meg Kalthof netted the game-winner in the 87th minute to break a 1-1 tie and improve the Spartans to 4-0-0 in MAC Commonwealth play. Kalthof has scored all four of York's goals in the last two games as she leads the conference with six tallies on the season.

York 10-5-0 (4-0-0 MACC)

How It Happened
  • York swarmed Eastern from the start as the Spartans racked up a 7-0 short margin and two corners in the first 18 minutes of play. The Green and White put two shots on goal and hit a crossbar during that span.
  • The Spartans finally got on the board in the 20th minute on their third corner of the game. Meg Kalthof curled a beautiful ball in from the right corner which sailed perfectly inside the back post for the game's first tally.
  • York had plenty of chances to extend the lead before halftime, but Eastern keeper kept the Spartans at bay with four more saves to bring her first half total to six. York ended the first half with a 13-3 total shot advantage and an 8-0 margin in corner kicks.
  • The Spartans came out of the halftime break firing and produced four total shots in the first eight minutes, but hit a crossbar again and were denied once again by Leake. York kept turning up the pressure as the second half unfolded and compiled 11 shots with six on goal in a 30-minute span, but came away with zero goals.
  • York's missed opportunities eventually came back to haunt them when Eastern netted the equalizer in the 80th minute as Madely Mullen played a pass into the box to Morgan Crake who scored for the first time this season.
  • The game seemed headed for a draw until Kalthof suddenly rewrote the script in the 87th minute. The Spartan freshman found herself in a one-on-one with a defender up the right side before she reversed course, cut back to the middle and looped a shot through defenders to the upper left corner of the goal for the game-winner.
  • York ended the game with a 28-5 shot advantage, including a 15-5 margin in shots on goal, in addition to a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks.
