HAVRE DE GRACE, MD – The York College men's golf squad had a solid day during the opening round of the Arcadia Fall Invitational at Bulle Rock Golf Club in Havre De Grace, Maryland. The Spartans fired a 304 in the opening round as they hold an 11-stroke lead over second place Alvernia in the seven-team field. Jefferson, Albright and Arcadia are all tied for third at 325.
The Spartan tandem of
Jacob Fripp and
Matthew Salter both played well as they are tied for second. They each shot a three-over-par 75 as they are both two strokes back of first-round leader Shawn Williams from Alvernia.
Fripp shot a four-over 40 on the front and then got hot on the back nine with a one-under 35. Fripp had a trio of birdies on the back for his 75. Salter shot 39 on the front and completed his round with an even-par 36 on the back nine.
Sophomore
Nate Myers was York's third finisher as he is tied for fourth with a four-over 76. Myers fired a three-over 39 on the front. He sliced a pair of strokes off that total on the back with a one-over 37. Junior
Jason Velez was York's fourth finisher as he is tied for eighth after day one. Velez shot 78 for his round as he had a tale of two nines. Velez was sizzling on the front with a two-under 34. He shot a very uncharacteristic 44 on the back to finish with his 78.
Freshman
Tom O'Connell was York's fifth tournament participant. He shot an 84 as he is tied for 24
th in the 39-player field.
York returns to action on Tuesday morning to play round two of the tournament. Myers kicks off the Spartan lineup as he goes off at 10:00 am. Myers is followed by Velez (10:12), O'Connell (10:24), Fripp (10:36) and Salter (10:48).
