READING, PA – The York College women's soccer squad picked up their seventh road win of the year as they blanked Alvernia University 2-0 in MAC Commonwealth play in Reading. The game was played in a misty, cold rain but the Spartans negotiated the elements successfully in picking up the win.
York improves to 9-5 overall and 3-0 in the league while the Golden Wolves fall to 1-11-2 and 0-2-1 in the league.
How It Happened
• The Spartans got off to a good start as they carried the early play in the steady rain in Reading. The Green and White fired off the first three shots of the game but all three were off frame in the first 12 minutes of the match. The Golden Wolves forced Spartan goalie
Madison O'Brien to make the first save on a Haley Dougherty shot in the 13
th minute. The Spartans then got on the scoreboard in the 29
th minute on a great individual effort by
Meg Kalthof. The freshman forward collected a long pass along the right sideline. She beat three different Alvernia defenders before unleashing a shot on goal. Her shot eluded Alvernia keeper Brynn Bock as the ball crossed the goal line for the 1-0 Spartan lead.
• York held a 6-2 edge in total shots including 3-1 in shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes of play. Neither team attempted a corner kick in the first half.
• The Spartans continued to pressure the Alvernia defense in the second half. York tacked on their second goal of the game as Kalthof received a long outlet from midfield. She collected the pass and made a move on a hard charging Bock and finished off the chance in the open goal for the 2-0 lead. Kalthof's goal came in the 53
rd minute of the match.
• York continued to pepper the Alvernia goal but wouldn't be able to add to the lead. The Spartans out shot Alvernia 12-3 in the second half and finished the game with an 18-5 bulge in total shots. York had an 8-3 edge in shots on goal while they also had a 2-1 margin in corner kicks.
