Wolves Top Spartans in Friday Conference Tilt

READING, Pa. - The York men's soccer squad suffered a setback at Alvernia on Friday evening in a 2-1 loss which gave the Golden Wolves their fourth-straight game without a loss.

All three goals were scored in the second half with Alvernia notching the first two (51' & 65') before Mitchell Seipt put York on the board in the 88th minute of play)

Team Records
York 4-5-3 (1-2-0 MACC)
Alvernia 7-5-1 (3-0-0 MACC)

How It Happened
  • The Wolves took a 10-2 lead in shots into the halftime break with each team putting just one shot on goal during the first 45 minutes of play.
  • Zeke Zambrano broke up the scoreless tie in the 51st minute off an Alvernia throw-in. After receiving the throw from Michael Pierce, Zambrano drove towards the right corner of the box and slipped just inside the right post. Spartan keeper Jake Bono appeared to be screened on the play as Zambrano's shot curled around several bodies on its way towards the goal.
  • Alvernia tacked on another off a corner set piece in the 65th minute. This time, Zambrano played the role of set-up man as he played a ball in from the right corner and Gabe Wunderlich came rushing in unmarked to finish the easy header into the goal.
  • The Spartans did not go home quietly and fought to the last whistle. Their persistence paid off in the 88th minute on a free kick. Brandon Holy served a ball into the box from 40 yards out, then Noah Roche headed the ball high towards the goal where Mitchell Seipt managed to run on and headed it home for his first tally of the season.

Up Next
The Spartans return home next Wednesday to take on Eastern in a MAC Commonwealth matchup slated for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

Notes
York falls to 4-3-2 all-time against Alvernia … the Spartans are on a three-game skid against the Golden Wolves as they have yet to defeat Alvernia since joining the Commonwealth.
