Spartans Stumble at Alvernia on Saturday Afternoon

READING, Pa. - The York women's basketball team closed out the week with their second-straight conference loss to another top team in the MAC Commonwealth standings in a 73-61 loss at Alvernia on Saturday.

The Spartans were held to just six points after an even opening quarter and then surrendered 25 third-quarter points to Alvernia which proved to be too much to overcome as the Golden Wolves cruised to their eighth conference win to extend their home win streak to six-straight.

Team Records
York 7-13 (4-7 MACC)
Alvernia 13-7 (8-3 MACC)

How It Happened
  • After an even start through the first three minutes, Alvernia broke open an eight-point lead with 4:49 left to play in the first period. Brooklyn Naylor scored a layup on the ensuing York possession which ended a three-minute scoring drought and sparked an 11-4 Spartan run to end the quarter as the Green and White fought back to trail, 18-17. Bradi Zumbrum led York with five points on that run and ended the opening quarter with a near double-double at eight points and seven rebounds.
  • The Spartans went cold in the second quarter as they shot just 3-for-22 from the floor, including an 0-for-6 effort from three-point range, as they were out-scored 16-6 in the period. Alvernia did not shoot particularly well either in the second quarter at just 25.0% from the floor and also did not make a three-point field goal. Where the Golden Wolves did gain ground on the Spartans was with a 16-2 advantage in fast break points throughout the first half as they took a 34-23 edge into halftime.
  • Following a tough shooting quarter for both teams in the second quarter, York and Alvernia each shot 44.4% from the field in the third and combined for 44 points with AU edging out a 25-19 margin in the period. The Golden Wolves busted out on a 10-2 run through the first three minutes of the quarter to open up a 19-point advantage, but York responded with a 7-2 run over the next two minutes to cut the AU lead to 14 with just under five minutes left. The two teams traded buckets the rest of the period, but the Golden Wolves maintained a safe distance as they hit three of five three-point attempts down the stretch to take a commanding 59-42 lead into the final quarter.
  • The Spartans went on to win the final quarter, 19-14, courtesy of a 7-0 run to end the game. York limited Alvernia to just 25.0% from the floor in the final frame despite the Golden Wolves dominating the boards, 18-6. For the game, Alvernia made life tough on York with a 24-5 advantage in fast break points, combined with a 62-41 lead in rebounds and a 13-8 edge in second-chance points.x
