Lions Hold Off Spartans in 70-64 Battle Tuesday Night

YORK, Pa. - The York College women's basketball dropped a hard-fought MAC Commonwealth battle with Albright on Tuesday night at Wolf Gym, 70-64, as the Lions swept the season series.

Albright's Mackenzie Dover led all players with 23 points on a 7-for-12 shooting night with a 6-for-9 effort from the free throw line. Tori Geitner posted 16 points to lead a group of five Spartans who landed in double figures. Brooklyn Naylor put together her first-career double-double performance with career-highs in points (13) and rebounds (13).

Team Records
Alvernia 14-7 (8-4 MACC)
York 7-14 (4-8 MACC)

How It Happened
  • Albright jumped out to an early 10-2 lead until a Brooklyn Naylor layup ended the 6-0 drought for the Spartans. Naylor would score York's next four points, cutting the Albright lead to four. From there, both teams exchanged baskets with the Lions coming out on top, 20-14, led by guard Mackenzie Dover with eight points and guard Amina Rauf with six.
  • The Lions looked to extend their six point lead as the second quarter began, but the Spartans received a big lift from Tori Geitner who poured in 11 points with three three-points  in the quarter. Gabby Boggs and Rauf helped maintain the Lion's lead at halftime (38-33) as each finished with 10 points through the first 20 minutes.
  • The second half started well for the Spartans who chipped away at the lead with contributions from Savannah Wilson, Taylor Burda and Bradi Zumbrum to bring York within two points (44-42) of the Albright lead with four minutes left in the third. Albright would not give in as Dover's hot shooting continued. She would end up scoring the Lions' last 11 points of third to extend the Albright lead to 53-45.
  • Both teams continued to battle as the fourth quarter unfolded. Zumbrum started to pick it up for the Spartans, scoring four-straight points to cut the deficit down to single digits (58-51) with 6:05 left. Less than three minutes later, jumpers by Wilson and Naylor put the Spartans within four (59-55) with 3:15 remaining. Two more buckets from Naylor and Wilson would cut the deficit to two twice in the final two minutes, but that was as close as the Spartans would get. Dover would score four points in the final 30 seconds for Albright to seal the win for the Lions.
