Spartan Win Streak Snapped at Alvernia

Kai Cipalla records first-career double-double for York

READING, Pa. - An early second half run by Alvernia sparked a big second half for the Golden Wolves in a 70-56 victory Saturday which snapped a three-game winning streak for the York men's basketball team.

The MAC Commonwealth-leading Golden Wolves broke open a one-possession game with a 10-0 run to start the second half and never looked back as they went on to shoot well over 60% in the half. Alvernia left little margin of error for York on the day as the host squad shot 50.9% for the game, aided by a 17-2 margin in fast break points, and held the Spartans to 30.3% from the field and 23.3% from three-point range, which are both well below their season averages.

Team Records
York 10-10 (4-7 MACC)
Alvernia 15-5 (9-2 MACC)

How It Happened
  • After three scoreless minutes to begin the game, Kai Cipalla notched the game's first points with a layup followed by a pair of buckets from Jackson Mascari as the Spartans edged out a 6-2 lead in the first five minutes of play.
  • The two teams traded points over the next six minutes until a 7-0 Spartan run fueled by Cipalla gave York a 21-17 lead with 7:00 left in the first half.
  • The scoring pace intensified down the stretch of the first half as the two teams combined for 26 points in the final 6:22 with Alvernia out-gaining the Spartans, 16-10. It appeared as though York would take a lead into the halftime break when Mascari put the Green and White up, 31-30, with 30 seconds left. Nigel Cooke had other plans, however, as he knocked down a three as time expired to put Alvernia ahead, 33-31, at the half.
  • The Golden Wolves scored the first 10 points of the second half, led by six from Jakob Kelly, which extended a 13-0 Alvernia run due to the buzzer-beating three by Cooke to end the first half. Chris Miers scored the first bucket of the half for York after a 4:32 scoreless drought as the Spartans trailed 43-33 with 16:27 left.
  • The Alvernia lead reached 13 points with 14:09, but the Spartans went on to score the next six points to get the deficit below 10. York kept the AU lead below 10 until for the next 10 minutes and even pulled within four at one point during that span on a Miers three-point bucket.
  • The Spartans kept the deficit manageable until Malik Green knocked down a three for Alvernia with 2:01 left to bump the lead back up to double-digits and ultimately seal the win for the Golden Wolves. Alvernia led the second half wire to wire while shooting a staggering 64.0% from the field and limiting the Spartans to just 27.3%.
