Spartans Show Resiliency in 72-69 Comeback Win Over Albright

YORK, Pa. - The Spartan men's basketball team pulled out a second-half comeback at home over Albright for a 72-69 victory Wednesday night to complete the season sweep of the Lions.

The Spartans battled back from two double-digit deficits and took the lead for the first time with 8:36 left following a clutch 11-0 run. A Kai Cipalla layup with eight seconds remaining put York in the lead for good and Chris Miers iced the game with a pair of free throws with three seconds on the clock. Miers played a key role in the Spartan's second-half comeback as he scored all 10 of his points in the half and Jayden Rowe poured in 13 of his game-high 20 points in the last 20 minutes.

York 11-10 (5-7 MACC)

How It Happened
  • The Lions roared out to an 11-0 run off the opening tip as the Spartans went scoreless for the first 3:33. Tate Landis scored the first seven points for the Green and White which sparked a 14-4 York run over the next seven minutes as the Albright lead shrunk to 15-14 with 7:23 left in the first half.
  • Jayden Rowe tied the game up, 21-21, with a pair of free throws with 3:58 left in the first, but York managed to score just two points the rest of the way. Albright out-scored the Spartans 8-2 in the final three minutes of the first half with Chris Kouemi accounted for four of those points.
  • Both teams shot well under 40% from the field in the first half and with the Spartans shooting just 18.8% (3-for-16) from three point range. The Spartans lost the rebounding battle, 24-7, in the first half, but managed to keep things close courtesy of a 12 turnovers by the Lions to just four by York.
  • Albright clung to a slim lead to start the second half before eventually breaking open a 10-point lead with 11:39 left. Just as the game seemed to be slipping away, the Spartans came storming back on an 11-0 run to take a 53-52 lead with under nine minutes to play while holding the Lions scoreless for nearly four minutes after they took their double-digit lead.
  • A Robert Mangum jumper put Albright back in the lead with 7:44 left and the Lions did not surrender the lead again until a pair of Cipalla free throws with 1:17 left put York back in front, 66-65.
  • After trading buckets, Albright caught a break when Jordan Guerrero stole the ball away from Landis on the way up the court and took it the other way for a two-hand jam to put the Lions up 69-68 with 21 seconds left. On the ensuing Spartan possession, Cipalla made a layup and was fouled on the play which put him at the line with eight seconds left and his team up one. Cipalla hit back iron on his free throw attempt, but grabbed his own rebound and kicked it out to Miers who was then fouled with three ticks remaining on the clock. Miers proceeded to hit both his free throws which sealed the win for the Green and White.
