Slow Start Proves Costly For Spartans Against #21 Messiah

YORK, Pa. - The York women's basketball team struggled to gain traction early in a 52-41 loss to No. 21 Messiah at home Wednesday night in a MAC Commonwealth matchup.

The Spartans held the MAC Commonwealth-leading Falcons to their lowest point total against a conference opponent this season, but Messiah made up for the lack of offense by limiting the Spartans to single digits in each of the first two quarters and holding the Green and White to well under 50 points for the second time this season.

Reigning MAC Commonwealth Player of the Week Bradi Zumbrum led all players with 19 points, but had her double-double streak snapped at five-straight with just four rebounds on the night. Savannah Wilson led all players with six assists to go along with seven points. Brooklyn Naylor led the Spartans with six rebounds.

#21 Messiah 17-2 (10-0 MACC)
York 7-12 (4-6 MACC)

How It Happened
  • Neither team found a sound offensive rhythm in the first quarter as Messiah ultimately slugged out a 10-6 lead at the end of one. The Falcons opened the game on a 7-0 run through the first four minutes of play, but the Spartans ended the quarter with a 6-3 advantage with Bradi Zumbrum leading the way with three points.
  • Messiah controlled the boards in the second quarter by way of a 10-4 advantage which resulted in a 7-2 margin in second-chance points and a 16-4 margin in overall points in the period. The Falcons opened the second quarter with eight unanswered points to increase the lead to 12. York managed to score twice in the final five minutes of the second quarter, but Messiah tacked on five more in the final 72 seconds, highlighted by a Charlotte Milanesi three-pointer with 33 seconds left, to take a 16-point lead into the locker room.
  • After being held to just two points through the first five minutes of the third quarter, the Spartans ended the period on an 11-5 run as they trailed 41-23 heading into the fourth. Zumbrum led the charge with five points on that run and York went to work down low scoring 10 of their 13 third-quarter points in the paint with the remaining three coming via the free throw line.
  • York continued to chip away to start the fourth quarter, scoring seven unanswered points to cut the Messiah lead to 41-30 with 5:29 to go. Unfortunately, the Spartans would come up empty on their next five possessions while the Falcons built their lead up to 18 with 3:29 left, which ultimately sealed York's fate. The Spartans, however, did not go away quietly as they out-scored Messiah 11-4 in the final two minutes and finished the quarter with an 18-11 scoring margin on a game-high 41.2% effort from the field.
