Burda, Geitner Power Spartans to Win Over Widener

YORK, Pa. - The York women's basketball team got back in the win column with a much-needed 63-49 MAC Commonwealth victory over Widener at home Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans snapped a season-high four-game skid and ended a four-game conference losing streak with a pair of career-high 19-point performances by Taylor Burda and Tori Geitner who combined to shoot 50.0% from beyond the arc with nine three pointers.

How It Happened
  • Bradi Zumbrum accounted for the first six points of the game for York as the Spartans edged out to a 6-4 lead five minutes into the contest. Widener countered with an 8-0 run to take an 11-6 lead with just over two minutes remaining in the opening quarter. Tori Geitner knocked down a three to break up the Pride run and cut the deficit to two points. Widener protected their lead to end the first quarter as they owned a 14-11 advantage courtesy of a 3-for-5 effort from beyond the arc.
  • York put together a strong performance in the second quarter utilizing a 4-for-7 performance from three-point range while shooting 54.5% overall from the floor. Geitner led all scorers with nine points on a trio of three-pointers which all came in the first two minutes of the period. The Spartans carried their early momentum all the way to halftime as they out-scored the Pride 18-4 to take a 29-18 lead into the locker room.
  • The Spartans, led by Taylor Burda, doubled up the Pride in the third quarter with an 18-9 scoring advantage as the York led swelled to 20 (47-27) at the end of period. Burda led all players with 14 third-quarter points on a spectacular 4-for-5 effort from beyond the arc. York put together a stout defensive effort, limiting Widener to just two field goals while the Pride lost the turnover battle for the third-straight quarter.
  • Zumbrum assisted on a Brooklyn Naylor layup which gave the Spartans a 22-point advantage, their largest lead of the game, with 6:20 left in the fourth quarter. From that point, Widener went on to score nine unanswered led by Mary McFillin with seven points and later trimmed down the Spartan lead to 11 with 2:40 remaining. York managed to hold off the late surge by the Pride and out-scored the Widener, 10-7, through the final two-and-a-half minutes to seal the win.
