Spartans Make Home Opener a Happy One

Four different Spartans score in the win over Harrisburg

YORK, PA – The York College women's soccer team made their 2022 home debut a successful one as the Spartans downed Penn State Harrisburg 4-1 on a warm, steamy Sunday night in York.
The Spartans improve to 1-1 overall while the Lions fall to 0-1-2. The Spartans got four goals from four different goal scorers in the win.

How It Happened
• The Spartans started to pressure the Lions early as they had a corner kick and a shot in the first 75 seconds of the game. The pressure continued and then paid off for York as senior Anna Moore collected a pass along the far sideline. She drove past a Lion defender and carried the ball to the end line. Morton turned the corner and put a great pass into the box where Makayla Harper blasted a shot into the back of the net in the eighth minute for the 1-0 lead.
• The Spartans put two more shots on goal over the next 15 minutes but Lion keeper Sydney Mulka registered a pair of saves. The Lions countered in the 23rd minute as Abigail Frew tallied a goal. Frew found the ball on her foot at the 18 after a loose ball went off a Spartan defender. She struck a shot that went into the back of the netting, tying the game at one. The goal was Frew's first of the year.
• York got the go-ahead goal in the 35th minute as Ashlynn Weger took a page out of Morton's book. She drove to the end line, turned the corner and put a pass on the foot of Julianna Schilling. The freshman knew what to do as she drilled home the chance for her first collegiate goal for the 2-1 York lead.
• Weger struck again as she hit another brilliant pass to Alyssa Russell in the box. Russell knew what to do as she banged home a one-timer for the 3-1 Spartan lead in the 37th minute.
• The Lions came out of half and took the play to the Spartans over the opening 15 minutes of the half. Senior goalie Jacqueline Keogh made three saves to keep the Lions from inflicting any more damage. The Spartans pushed the lead to 4-1 when freshman Abby Brown score her first collegiate goal with a bomb from 32-yards out in the 64th minutes. York would go out to close out the game for their first win of the year.
