Spartans Cap Off Opening Weekend with a Pair of 3-0 Wins

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. - The York women's volleyball team rebounded from an opening day loss with a pair of 3-0 victories over Marywood and Keuka on Saturday to cap off their weekend  road trip to New York.

Match One
Team Records

York 1-1
Marywood 1-1

How It Happened
  • The Spartans trailed by as much as nine in the opening set before ultimately fighting their way back to a 29-27 victory. Leading, 24-19, the Pacers had set point well within their sights, but they went on to surrender seven-straight points which gave York a 25-24 lead. Shannon Salo led York with a pair of kills down the stretch to secure the first set victory.
  • York pulled away midway through the second set to a 25-20 victory led by Briyana Shepard's set-leading four kills. The Spartans took a 14-13 lead into a 21-14 advantage, capped off by back-to-back service aces by Alyssa Mott, to put the clamps down on Marywood. The Pacers fought back to cut the deficit to three (23-20) before an attack error and an Abby Diehl service ace sealed the set in favor of the Spartans.
  • Shepard once again led all players in kills as she racked up seven in the third set as York edged out a 25-23 win. A key 7-0 Spartan run gave York a 23-19 advantage with Mott racking up three service aces to fuel that run. Marywood rallied back to tie the set, 23-23, but after a Shepard kill broke up the Pacer run, Lilly Morton checked in to deliver the match-clinching service ace for York.

Match Two
Team Records
York 2-1
Keuka 0-3

How It Happened
  • The Spartans found themselves in a back-and-forth battle with Keuka until pulling away late to a 25-20 victory in set one. York moved out to a 20-16 lead and held that cushion down the stretch by scoring points on six of the final 10 rallies.
  • York held off a late surge by Keuka to prevail 25-20 in the second set. The Spartans took a commanding 21-13 lead, but the Wolves clawed their way back with a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to three (23-20). The Keuka rallied stalled on an attack error and the Spartans immediately closed the door on the ensuing possession as Jennifer Taylor finished off a set from Abby Diehl for the winning point.
  • After falling behind 10-7, the Spartans came storming back on an 18-6 run to finish the set and claim a 25-16 victory. Several Spartans posted multiple kills on that run, led by a trio from Taylor. Morgan Nolte also had a critical performance on York's big run with two kills and two aces.
