Saints Slip Past Spartans in Non-Conference Action

Nall scores the Spartans lone goal

ARLINGTON, VA – The York College men's soccer team suffered a disappointing road loss on Wednesday night as Marymount nipped the Spartans 2-1 in non-conference action in Arlington, VA.
The Spartans have now dropped two straight as they fall to 5-2-2. The Saints improve to 4-5 overall with the win. The victory snaps the Saints' three match losing streak.

How It Happened
• The Spartans struck early as York earned a corner kick 4:42 into the game. Cole Kendra struck the corner and Jack Mitzelfelt flicked the ball to Luke Nall who finished the chance for the Spartan goal. The teams would go back and forth over the next 20 minutes before the Saints notched the equalizer in the 30th minute as Jesus Rios found Leonardo Torres on a counter and Torres tied the game with his fifth goal of the year. Marymount out shot York 8-3 in the first half but York had a 2-1 margin in shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes.
• The second half was one of opportunities missed for the Green and White. The Spartans had the half's first shot on goal in the 61st minute when Niko Cornell hit a shot off a corner that was saved by Saint goalie Bayron Banegas. The Saints had one chance in the second half and they capitalized as the Saints forced a Spartan turnover and played the ball forward for the chance. Rodrigo Anez-Soliz pushed the ball up to Torres who finished the opportunity for his second goal of the game and sixth of the year. The goal came in the 68th minute of play.
• That is all the Saints would need as York was able to get four shots over the final 22 minutes of the game with the final chance coming off the foot of Connor Oburn with 21 seconds left. Oburn's strike was saved by Banegas to preserve the upset win.

Spartan Notes
The loss to Marymount is just the third in school history as York is now 25-3-4 all-time against the Saints … two two teams tied last fall in a game played in a torrential downpour … junior Luke Nall notched his second goal of the season for the Spartans while Jack Mitzelfelt and Cole Kendra each recorded their second assists of the season … York has just four shots on goal in their last two games … the two goals allowed are the most York has conceded in a game this year … York out shot their hosts 10-9 while both teams had three shots on goal … York held a 7-6 margin in corner kicks … York received four cards in the game while the Saints did not get a card in the match.

Up Next
