Spartan Men Fall to Widener in Commonwealth Opener

YORK, Pa. - The York men's soccer team opened MAC Commonwealth play Saturday with 3-1 loss to Widener at rain-soaked Graham Field.

Sean Fatiga tallied twice for Widener in the first 23 minutes of play as Widener ripped off three unanswered through 69 minutes of play to put the game out of reach.

York 5-3-2 (0-1-0 MACC)

How It Happened
  • The Pride wasted little time getting on the board as Sean Fatiga netted the game's first tally in the fourth minute of play. Fatiga leveraged a York player off the ball in the midfield and struck a low shot to the left corner from approximately 25 yards out for his fourth goal of the season.
  • Fatiga had a great opportunity to tack on another in the 15 minute, but set his shot just wide of the net. Michael Donaghy sent a beautiful thru ball between Spartan defenders to Fatiga who gained possession right at the PK line, but Brady Bixler came sprinting off the end line to force Fatiga to send his shot left of the frame.
  • Fatiga had another prime opportunity in the 23rd minute and this time he did not miss. Andrew Hurrell started the play by carrying the ball up the right sideline where he dumped it back to Bryce Seshaies who played a long pass ahead deep into the box. Fatiga settled the ball from his chest to his feet and one-touched it past Bixler from seven yards out.
  • The Pride tacked on their third-straight tally in the 69th minute following a corner. Angelo Pelosi settled the loose ball outside the 18 and played into the box to Michael Buckley who one-touched up to Max Hartke who slipped in the left side of the net.
  • A minute later, York responded with a goal to break up the shutout bid for Widener. Noah Roche received a throw-in up the left sideline and split two defenders. He carried the ball towards the end line and crossed it to the middle where Gavin Bealer back-healed a one-time shot inside the right post for his first-career tally.
