Knox and Martino Power the Spartans Past the Blue Jays

Spartan duo tallies two goals each in the win

YORK, PA – The York College field hockey team had another offensive explosion as the Spartans downed Elizabethtown College 5-0 in a non-conference contest on a cool Wednesday evening in York.
The Spartans improve to 7-2 overall while the Blue Jays fall to 4-5. York has won two straight and five of their last six matches.

How It Happened
• The Spartans jumped on the Blue Jays early as they fired off five shots in the first 4:43 of the game. The Blue Jays got their first corner and first shot in the seventh minute of the game but York responded with the game's first goal two minutes later. Junior Maycee Collison fired a shot that was saved but the rebound went right back to her and she put home the second chance for the goal. The tally was her third of the year and gave York the early lead.
• The second period was tilted heavily in favor of York as they held the Blue Jays without a shot in the period while the Spartans had seven shots and three corners. York struck pay dirt on their final shot of the quarter as freshman Kat Knox received a pass from Riley Buschert and put it home for her seventh goal of the year and a 2-0 Spartan lead.
• York extended the lead just under six minutes into the second half as Knox struck for her second goal of the game. Mya Gerena played the ball in from the right wing and Knox drilled it home for the goal. York carried the play the remainder of the quarter as York would out shoot Elizabethtown 8-1 in the period.
• The Spartans closed out the game with a pair of fourth quarter goals by Katie Martino. Martino's first goal came in the 47th minute as she poked home a rebound off a shot from Maggie Spadafora. Her second tally game just under three minutes later as Spadafora hit a pass across the goal and Martino finished off on the back post for the 5-0 Spartan lead. The goals were Martino's fifth and sixth of the year. York out shot the Blue Jays 10-0 in the fourth quarter.
