YORK, PA – The York College women's soccer team captured a 1-0 upset win over #24 University of Rochester on a sunny Saturday in York. The Spartans, who remain unbeaten at home, improve to 5-2-1 while Rochester falls to 4-1-3.
The win over a ranked team is the first in the tenure of Spartan head coach
Kelly Wakeman.
How It Happened
• The Spartans got a corner kick a mere 14 seconds into the game as they came after the Yellow Jackets right on the kick off. Each team got a shot over the next ten minutes of play as the teams took turns with possession. The Yellow Jacket defense then made a rare mistake that the Spartans took advantage of. Rochester's keeper Grace Kuropatkin had a ball played back to her. On her clear attempt,
Anna Morton intercepted the pass and sent the ball towards a wide-open
Makayla Harper. Harper one-timed the finish to put York on top 1-0 in just the 13
th minute of the game. The goal was Harper's team-leading third of the season.
• Rochester had the better of the play over the remainder of the first half. They had four shots over the final 30 minutes of play while they also had a pair of corner kicks but those shots did no damage as York had the 1-0 lead at the half.
• The Jackets came out of the half and pressured the Spartans early as Savannah Berry recorded a shot on goal just 17 seconds into the stanza. Spartan keeper
Jacqueline Keogh was forced to make a second save 31 seconds later as Megan Pung put a shot on target that Keogh stopped. The Yellow Jackets had a dangerous chance in the 53
rd minute as Claire Grover hit a header that Keogh saved to preserve the Spartan lead.
• Keogh continued to make plays for York in the 67
th minute as she was forced to make a sprawling save on a Riya Kunderan shot that looked like it had a chance to tie the game. Keogh saved her best save for last as the Yellow Jackets had a breakaway on the foot of leading scorer Claire Grover. Grover had a point blank shot that Keogh turned away and the Spartan defense was able to clear the ball and preserve the clean sheet.
• The Yellow Jackets outshot the Spartans 12-4 in the second half including 6-1 in shots on goal.
