Russell's Goal Lifts Spartans to 1-0 Win over Dickinson

The Spartans win their second straight Wednesday contest 1-0

YORK, PA – For the second straight Wednesday at home, the Spartan women's soccer team picked up a 1-0 win, this time over Dickinson College, on a sun splashed afternoon in York. Last Wednesday, the Spartans blanked Salisbury 1-0 at Graham Field.
The Spartans improve to 3-2 overall including 3-0 at home. The Red Devils fall to 2-3 overall including 0-3 on the road. Dickinson has lost three straight with all three decisions coming by one goal.

How It Happened
• The first half was evenly played and was contest primarily in the middle of the field. The two teams both had four shots with Dickinson putting two on frame while one of York's attempts came on goal. Neither team had a dangerous opportunity in the opening 45 minutes of play.
• The Spartans struck for a goal in the 50th minute of the game. The ball was played into the top of the box and squirted to the foot of Alyssa Russell. The Spartan sophomore cranked a blast toward goal that was initially pushed upwards by Dickinson keeper Sophia Kavulich. The ball went up, hit the cross bar and then hit the back of Kavulich and went into the net for Russell's second goal of the year.
• Dickinson pressured the Spartans over the final 25 minutes of the game. The Red Devils best chance came in the 69th minute as Meg Tate drilled a shot off the cross bar that caromed back into play, preserving York's 1-0 lead. Dickinson outshot York 9-5 in the second half but both teams put three shots on target in the half.
