Women's Volleyball Wins a Pair at Harrisburg

Spartan win streak increases to five-straight

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - The York women's volleyball team picked up a pair of victories Saturday as the Spartans made the short trip up I-83 to compete at the Penn State Harrisburg tri-match.

York handed the host Lions a 3-1 defeat in the opening match of the day before rolling to a 3-0 victory over Shenandoah in their second match of the afternoon.

How It Happened
  • The Spartans cruised to a 25-15 first set victory as the Lions hit -0.45 in the opening frame. Claire Shorb led the Spartans with four kills to fuel the offensive effort in the first set.
  • York edged out a 25-23 win in set number two despite racking up a match-high 16 kills on a .314 hitting percentage. The Spartans pulled off a late comeback as they trailed 18-16. A 6-0 run led by a pair of kills from Sydney Wilber put the Spartans back in front for good as they went ahead 21-18 and held off a late surge by the Lions.
  • The Lions got into the win column with a 25-21 victory in the third set as they hit a match-best .265 with 13 kills. The Spartans had the edge late as they led 19-17, but Harrisburg won eight of the final 10 points to pull off the comeback.
  • York closed out the match with a 25-20 victory in set number four to secure the match against the Lions. The Spartans, trailing 12-10, took control of the set with an 8-0 run for a 17-12 advantage and never let the lead slip below three the rest of the way.

How It Happened
  • The Spartans and Hornets went back-and-forth the entire first set before York eventually pulled away at the end to a 26-24 win. The Spartans appeared to be in control of the set after a 7-0 run gave them a 20-16 lead, but Shenandoah immediately responded with a six-point run to regain the lead, 22-20. The Hornets had York on the ropes as they went ahead 24-21, but York came storming back on a 5-0 run, led by a trio of service aces by Abby Diehl, to clinch the set.
  • The second set had a little less drama as the Sartans rolled toa 25-15 win. Megan Rizzi led the Green and White with five kills in the set, including the last two points to put the set to bed.
  • The Spartans broke open a tight battle late on their way to a 25-20 win in the third set to clinch the match. Tied, 18-18, York out-scored the Hornets 18-2 down the stretch on four kills and a pair of service aces.

The Spartans return to conference play Tuesday night with a trip to Widener.

The Spartans extended their win streak to five as they capped off a 3-0 week with Saturday's doubleheader sweep … the Spartans recorded 54 kills against Harrisburg which is the most by a York squad since posting 58 against Salve Regina on Aug. 30, 2019 … Jennifer Taylor led the Spartans with a career-best 13 kills against the Lions .. York racked up a season-best 14 service aces in the win over Shenandoah, led by Abby Diehl's career-high tying six … Morgan Nolte led York with 19 kills on the day, including a career-best 12 against Harrisburg … Diehl compiled seven service aces and 70 assists on the day, including 40 assists against Harrisburg which is just three shy of matching her career-high … Alexis Southivong totaled 23 digs on the day to lead the team.
