Spartans Clip Blue Jays Late for 2-1 Opening Day Win

Dermot Williamson lifted York to victory with his 76th minute tally

YORK, Pa. - The York men's soccer team prevailed, 2-1, on a 76th tally from Dermot Williamson in the 2022 season opener against a spirited Elizabethtown squad Thursday night at Graham Field.

Team Records
Elizabethtown 0-1-0
York 1-0-0

How It Happened
  • The Blue Jays got on the board first with a tally off a corner kick in the ninth minute of action. Pedro Guizardi swung the ball in from the right corner and found Ed Rainey on the back post who had his close range shot saved by Mason Boyd. Fortunately for Elizabethtown, Boyd's save deflected out towards the middle where Jake Groh managed to knock the ball in for the easy tally.
  • York gained traction through the 23rd and 24th minutes led by Luke Nall bringing the pressure. The junior midfielder had a shot blocked, but came back less than a minute later with another opportunity. Nall carried the ball to the end line right of the net and played a cross into the box just out of the reach of Blue Jay keeper Kelvin Del Cid. Nall's pass found Tyler Howlett on the backside of the play all alone who tapped the ball in for the tying goal.
  • The Spartans had chances late in the first half with a pair of corners which ultimately resulted in a header by Brayden Safley that shot just wide of the frame.
  • Both teams played a spirited back-and-forth game through the first 30 minutes of the second half before York earned a corner in the 76th minute. Gavin Bealer sent the ball in from the right corner where it eventually fell on the right foot of Connor Oburn who passed left to Travis Gould who then back-healed the ball in front of the goal to Dermot Williamson who stuck it in the back of the net for the eventual game-winner.
  • The Blue Jays had one last quality chance in the 79th minute on a corner play. It appeared Etown had snuck one past a sprawling Boyd, but the tally was waved off due to a Blue Jay infraction in the box prior to the shot.

Up Next
The Spartans remain at home for a MAC crossover tilt with Arcadia on Sunday night at 4 p.m.

Notes
York improves to 2-2-1 against Elizabethtown in the all-time series … the Spartans are now 5-1-1 in season openers under head coach Evan Scheffey and 7-1-2 in their last 10 season-opening games … York is now 6-1-3 in its last 10 home openers having allowed just five goals in those games … the goal for Dermot Williamson is the first of his collegiate career as he did not see action last season as a freshman with the Green and White … sophomore Mason Boyd also made his collegiate debut and turned in a five-save performance in his first start in goal.
