#6 Spartans Rout Denison to Advance to Fourth-Straight NCAA Quarterfinals

Ryan Kennedy becomes York’s all-time leader in caused turnovers

YORK, Pa. - The No. 6 York men's lacrosse team scored 14 unanswered goals through the first three quarters in a 16-4 drubbing of No. 19 Denison Saturday night at Kinsley Field in the NCAA Third Round.

Jack Grayson led all players with a career-high seven points on a career-best five assists as he dished out four to help fuel an eight-goal second quarter for the Spartans. Ryan Kennedy posted a pair of caused turnovers to extend his record single-season total to 61 and moved into first place on the all-time list with 142 for his career.

How It Happened
After trading goals early in the first period, the Spartans finished the quarter with a 4-1 advantage as they out-shot the Big Red 14-2 and limited Denison to just one faceoff win on six attempts. Big Red goalie Archer Darrach kept it close as he made six saves in the period.

The Spartans put on a shooting clinic in the second quarter as they scored eight times on 12 total shots, putting nine of those shots on target, to take a 12-1 lead into halftime. Seven different Spartans scored in the second quarter with Dylan Wolf being the only repeat scorer with two. York held Denison to just five total possessions for the second-straight quarter as Vinny Facciponti went 6-for-8 at the faceoff dot.

York scored in the first two minutes of the third quarter on JD Townsend's second man-up goal of the night and then again on a Ben Mayer tally with 17 seconds left in the period. Jack Michael turned away all three shots the Big Red put on target as the Spartan defense limited Denison to just six total shots.

Jack Grayson connected with Will Harnick early in the fourth quarter for his fifth assist of the night as the Spartan run reached 14-straight goals. The Big Red answered a minute later to snap York's run and end a near 44-minute scoring drought. Denison tacked on two more unanswered over the next three minutes before Michael Russo tacked on one last goal for either team with 7:48 left.

The Spartans have advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals which is set for next Saturday at location yet to be determined. York will face the winner of the No. 14 Wesleyan/No. 3 Christopher Newport third-round matchup which is set for 3 p.m. on Sunday.

York is now 1-0 all-time versus Denison … York improves to 12-6 all-time in NCAA postseason play, including a record of 9-3 at Kinsley Field …  the Spartans extended their program-record win streak to 17-straight on the season … Ben Mayer moved into second place on the program's all-time single-season points list with 86, while taking over fifth place in assists (32) and moving into a tie with Will Harnick for fourth place in goals as both have 54 on the season … Jack Grayson's five assists on the night is the most by a Spartan this season and is the program record for an NCAA postseason game … Ryan Kennedy moved into first place on the program's all-time caused turnover list with 142, surpassing Bubba Kluver's previous record of 141 which stood since 2016 … the Spartans held Denison's 25th-ranked scoring offense to a season-low four goals which is just the third time this season the Big Red have been held to single digits … the Spartans limited the Big Red to a season-low 21 shots; Denison's previous low was 37 … York's 16 goals are the most given up this season by Denison's sixth-ranked scoring defense who entered the weekend surrendering just 7.21 goals per game … York's fourth-ranked scoring defense has now held opponents to single digits in 18 of 21 games this season … the Spartans are now 8-2 this season against teams ranked or receiving votes in the USILA poll
