#6 Men’s Lacrosse Advances to NCAA Semifinals on Thrilling OT Victory Over #3 CNU

The Spartans will make program's first-ever NCAA Semifinal appearance tomorrow against #8 Union

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - No. 6 York men's lacrosse fended off a second-half rally by No. 3 Christopher Newport to ultimately claim a 10-9 overtime victory in the NCAA Quarterfinals Saturday on CNU's home turf. The Spartans advance to their first-ever national semifinal appearance.

Christopher Newport erased a 5-2 halftime deficit with a five-goal third quarter surge as the two teams stood knotted up, 7-7, at the end of three quarters of play. The two teams traded goals in the fourth with Will Harnick tallying the critical game-tying tally with 5:23 left which ultimately sent the game into OT.

Late in overtime, a caused turnover by Ryan Kennedy gave the Spartans possession with 1:15 left and set up the game-winning goal by Jacob Wilhelm who finished off a feed from Harnick. The Spartans only possessed the ball once in their offensive zone in overtime as Jack Michael made two of his season-high 14 saves in the period and Noah Bruno came up with a huge blocked shot to keep the Captains at bay.

How It Happened
The game opened with a back-and-forth battle as both teams combined for three goals in less than three minutes early in the quarter with York owning a 2-1 edge. Jarrod Marenger scored twice for the Spartans in the period as York took a 3-1 edge after one quarter of play.

The Spartan defense put the clamps on the Captain's offense in the second quarter as they held CNU scoreless on nine total shots. Michael recorded four saves, including three in the first five minutes of the quarter, as the Captains dominated possession for most of the quarter. York capitalized on the defensive stand and scored a pair of goals 67 seconds apart by Jack Grayson and Marrenger on back-to-back possessions late in the period. The Captains won the faceoff following the second York tally, but a caused turnover by Kennedy with less than two minutes to play in the first half snuffed out any potential CNU momentum heading into halftime.

Ethan Greene scored right off the opening faceoff to begin the third quarter to give York a big shot in the arm as the Spartans extended their lead to four. The momentum was short-lived as the Spartans turned it over on their next two possessions which sparked a four-goal run by CNU as the Captains tied it up, 6-6, with 2:45 left in the third. The Spartans won the ensuing faceoff and Ben Mayer buried his shot to put the Spartans back on top, 7-6, but CNU had one more goal left in them before the quarter was over and forced a 7-7 tie heading into the fourth.

Mayer put the Spartans back on top 11:12 left in the fourth before a lot of unsettled play eventually led to a Dylan Rice goal for CNU with 7:58 left. After a pair of blocked shots by the Spartan defense, a Matty Mancuso penalty put the Captains on the man-up and they cashed in to go ahead, 9-8. York responded after winning the ensuing faceoff as Grayson connected with Harnick for the equalizer with 5:23 left in regulation. Both teams had multiple possessions in the final five minutes with Hunter Imbriale and Kennedy causing turnovers to stall out CNU's scoring chances to send the game into overtime.

CNU brought the pressure to start overtime despite a Michael save and a Brent Blackmon caused turnover in the first minute of play. The Spartans failed to clear twice over the next two minutes, but Michael came up with another clutch save and Kennedy came through with yet another interception to set up the game-winning possession for the offense on the other end. York caught CNU on their heels and scored quickly in transition with Wilhelm finding a soft spot in the defense and finishing off the extra pass from Harnick.
