#6 Spartans Lock Down #14 Cabrini Late in 9-6 Road Win

RADNOR, Pa. - No. 6 York men's lacrosse team pitched a fourth-quarter shutout after a back-and-forth battle with No. 14 Cabrini to earn a 9-6 road victory Friday night.

A defensive battle enfolded through the first half as two of the nation's top-20 defenses limited the offenses to just three combined goals. The script flipped in the third as the two teams combined for eight goals and York's seventh-ranked offense shut the door by scoring three goals in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter while the defense held the Cavaliers scoreless for the final 17 minutes.

Ben Mayer and Erick Ranck led the offense with four points each. Mayer scored pumped in three goals, while Ranck handed out a season-high three assists. Ryan Kennedy led all players with three caused turnovers and a game-high six ground balls. Jack Michael racked up 12 saves for his fifth double-digit saver performance of the season.

How It Happened
Jack Michael stepped up big for York early on with six saves in the first quarter of play, including a couple of shots from the doorstep to prevent the Spartans from falling behind early. A pair of caused turnovers by Ryan Kennedy in the opening quarter also helped stifle the Cavalier offense. The Cavaliers held York in check offensively in the first quarter of play as they held the Spartans to just three total shots in the period, but the Green and White also showed great patience and did not settle for bad looks.

Ben Mayer broke up the scoreless tie with 8:26 left in the second quarter on a second-chance opportunity following a Matt Nestler save. The York lead was very short-lived as Cabrini responded 34 seconds later on their ensuing possession following their faceoff win. York responded as Dylan Wolf put the Spartans back in front with 3:12 left after the Cavaliers coughed it up for the fifth time in the period.

York owned a 5-2 edge in successful clears in the second quarter while Cabrini turned it over seven times to York's two.

Cabrini tied it up less than three minutes into the third quarter and then took their first lead of the game with another goal 41 seconds later. A pair of big saves by Michael with 9:03 and 8:59 left in third from close range kept put a damper on some of the Cavalier momentum. Michael's stand led to an equalizer on the other end as Will Harnick buzzed a shot past Nestler with 7:29 left in the period before Ranck put the Spartans ahead, 4-3, with a tally 33 seconds later.

York did not hold the lead for long as Cabrini scored just nine seconds after Ranck's tally to tie it up, 4-4. The Cavaliers then went ahead less than two minutes later on the man-advantage. York took some wind out of Cabrini's sails when Noah Bruno sliced through the Cavalier defense in transition to net a tying goal just a minute later. However, the Cavaliers went back on top with 2:03 left when Mikey Vanaman took it all the way to the doorstep in transition following a Spartan turnover.

The Spartans looked sharp to start the fourth, scoring three-straight goals in the first four minutes of the period and took advantage of some costly Cabrini miscues. The Cavaliers took two penalties in the first five minutes, the first of which led to a Spartan goal, as JD Townsend gave the York their first multi-goal lead of the game as he shoved a shot past Nestler on the man-advantage.

After Townsend's goal with 10:54 left, Cabrini registered just two more shots the rest of the way and turned the ball over on their final four trips into their offensive zone with Brent Blackmon, Zach Mentzer and Jack Michael causing three of those turnovers.

Up Next
The Spartans are back on the road tomorrow for a Commonwealth contest at Lebanon Valley.

Notes
York is now 2-1 all-time against Cabrini … York ended Cabrini's seven-game win streak on the season and handed the Cavaliers their first home loss of the season, ending a 5-0 run … the Spartans are the first Division III team to defeat Cavaliers on their home field during the regular season since March 27, 2019 (Salisbury); Penn defeated Cabrini, 23-9, in last season's regular season finale at Edith Robb Dixon Field … York is now 4-0 away from this season in road and neutral site games with wins over two ranked teams in those contests … York held the Cavs to a season-low six goals after Cabrini had scored double-figures in the previous six games.
